I'm not a local, but I would say an outstanding yes. As long as you don't spend every night at the Bucket.

Yes I don't think that would be a problem especially if you owned your own place. We are planning on moving in about 2 years to Playa when hubby retires. We love Playa and have met some amazing people who live there.

It all depends on your lifestyle. I know couples that live on as little as 1000 USD and I know people that need 10,000 USD to cover their "basics"
    Im somewhere in the middle.

Us too, somewhere in the middle. But, we are a family of 5 with three kids in private schools, activities etc. If it was just Rob and I, $3500 per month would be just fine.

you can find some reasonable rentals...maybe not the 2 or bedrooms on the beach..those are alot higher...It's all what your interpretation of "moderate" is. Do you like to cook?
I'll take 2, please. Please bring them to me over here.

Certainly, you CAN save money cooking at home. Judging from the local restaurants and carts, the average Mexican working guy/gal is getting an awful lot of their meals out of the home. You CAN, especially as a couple, eat out VERY cheaply. The way I cook for my family at home generally costs WAY more than if I just brought them to Dona Mary's every night.

Why don't I just do that? Hmmm.

Yucatan Living has a great article about the cost of living in Merida. Living in Merida is cheaper than living in Playa del Carmen, but this gives a great overview of things. The prices for food appear to be the similar, whereas the cost for rent is much different. It's definitely a good starting point for people curious about the subject of the cost of living here.

I'm going away...to an unknown country where I shall have no past and no name and where I shall be born again with a new face and an untried heart.

Go for it and report back here on your experiences. Are you moving from Canada or the U.S. or somewhere else? Good luck!
