Nice tips. I love the "Almost Free" sign in the background, that phrase is so typical, I hear it so often in our MX travels! I also like how they try to make their sales sound personal "Oh pretty lady, today, we have a special deal just for you!"

I do have a question, the article stated that taxi's are negotiable- I always ask and if it seems reasonable, I get in. I have heard that PDC has standardized taxi rates-correct? How would one learn of these rates, are they posted in town, is there a website that lists the costs? Like for instance-is it standardized how much it would cost one way to PM or Akumal?...the price rates would be a good thing to know.

I know in Cozumel the taxis are unionized. I'm confused about how PDC's taxi system works. Any input is helpful.

Here is the current list of taxi rates for within Playa del Carmen and Playacar. I scanned this from some magazine, but I do not remember which one. If anyone knows which magazine I can give credit to for this information, please let me know!

A few moths ago, I actually went to the Sindicato de Taxistas - sounds a bit sinister if you ask me - to ask for current rate information. The people there were pretty friendly, and actually emailed me a partial list of rates. Unfortunately, it didn't make much sense to us, and we sent a follow-up email and never got a response.

Taxi rates are negotiable, but generally only when they charge above the rate listed above. You will find this to be the case on days or at times when it is difficult to find an available cab. If you are leaving a club at 3am, chances are good that you will get quoted rates upwards of 50 pesos for what would normally be a 14 pesos ride. You can either try to negotiate, or politely tell them that they charge too much and walk away.

Note, there are official taxi stands where you are usually guaranteed to find taxis day or night. These locations have an additional surcharge, and as far as I know, are not negotiable. The one at Juarez and 5th Avenue adds about 20 pesos to our fare. We are cheap, so we walk to 10th Avenue and Calle 2, flag down a taxi and avoid the surcharge.

As far as standard rates for coming to and leaving from Playa - there are probably standards, I don't think I've ever seen them. I think I may have seen a rate sheet by the colectivo stand on Calle 2, but it may have only been for out-of-Playa colectivos.

Great info to know. Never knew taxi stands had a surcharge- valuable info. You know I'm cheap too, I'll walk the extra blocks to get a cheaper rate anyday. Thanks for the helpful guide that you scanned! I will have to print it. It gives me a generalized idea.

Im assuming Zone 5 is Playacar area, Zone 1 centralized Playa, Zone 2 area north past Constituyentes & Zone 4 the other side of the hwy? Prehaps Im way off, there's tons of little streets!

Zone 1 - Playa central, bounded by the airport (3 Sur/South), Calle 34 on the North, Avenue 100 (mas o menos) on the West, the beach on the East.

Zone 2 - Calle 34 on the South, probably Calle 72 on the North, Highway 307 on the West, the beach on the East.

Zone 3 - Calle 72 on the South, the far-north end of Zazil-Ha on the North, Highway 307 on the West, the beach on the East.

Zone 4 - Areas West of Zone 1

    Zone 5 - Playacar

Zone 6 and Zone 7 - an exercise left for the reader.

The area between Zone 4 and Zone 6 is actually developed now, so this map is a bit dated. From Zone 1 to that area will probably cost you between 17 pesos and 26 pesos.

i paid 450 pesos from playa to the airport last year.
back to playa they ask for 600, but you can talk them down to 450 pesos.
if you have someone with you, who actually speaks spanish, that is.

Actually the fixed rate from the airport is closer to 800 pesos
Most won't deal since it's a controlled rate - but I imagine in these slow times, people will negotiate

Thats what thought, I find it had to believe that any cabbie at the airport would do that more then a few times, before he got his butt kicked

just to make sure, that there's no misunderstanding,
the cab driver gave me his phone number
when he drove me to the airport &
i had it arranged for him to pick me up at the airport
2 weeks later for the agreed price.

But it wasn't a PdC taxi was it?
Because they are not allowed to pick up fares at the airport.
Only Grey Line has the concession there.
Unless he picked you up off-site?

he didn't pick me up off-site,
but it was nearly 1 1/2 years ago
and I couldn't be sure whether it was one or the other, sorry.
