While it is a risk it is a small one, statistically speaking. Travel Insurance is imperative to either assist in getting you out or in covering your additional costs sholud you have to stay and weather the storm.
I was in Playa last summer as Dean was barrelling down on the peninsula. I tell you - the days leading up to landfall on Monday were tense tense tense. Remember that bitch was heading stright for Playa before she turned south at almost the last minute.
Our flight out of Mexico was originally scheduled for Monday (landfall). I tried to get an earlier flight out - but so were how many other tens or hudreds of thousands of people? Moreover, while I had travel insurance to assist me, my traveling companion did not. She did not think it was worth the $100 premium. She thinks differently now.
Our hotel made great preparations and assured us they were prepared for their guests to ride it out (La Tortuga - they ROCK). We all made trips to wal mart to stock up on things (beer, toilet paper...you know, the essentials).
Long story short is that we were on one of the last flights out on Monday...it was actually in the afternoon and the weather was still calm and sunny...you'd never know what was out there. Actually, that surreal feeling was present all weekend prior to Dean hitting. It was beautiful and sunny. We'd be bobbing in the ocean, looking out over Cozumel and ssaying "goddamn...she's out there right now getting bigger and stronger and heading right towards us"
Monday was a madhouse at the airport, understandably. Thank god we were actualy ticketed, there were throngs of folks who were just showing up in hopes of getting on standby. What was remarkable is that once you got thru all the lines at checkin and then security...they were moving planes in and out of that airport so damn fast you have got to question why the hell you are EVER delayed (other than for weather). A plane would pull up to the gate, they'd fill it in record time, shut the damn door and next thing you know its barrelling down the tarmac and up and away. Over and over like clockwork.
I snapped these on Monday:
