When we're in Tulum, we often go to Paraiso beach and just hang out at the area north of the bar/restaurant. There's a little dirt road that takes you there. We take our own food and cooler of beverages. Many locals do the same thing. If you get too close to the restaurant's turf their little security guard will come over and try to shoo you away, but they really can't do anything because, by law, the beach is public property. The beach is beautiful, but the people at the restaurant piss me off by trying to keep people off "their" beach. I respect their property and their right to make a living, but the beach itself isn't theirs.
