Isla is great and a perfect day-trip from Playa del Carmen. You can easily take a bus to Cancun and a cab to the ferry (Gran Puerto) in Puerto Juarez. The ferry ride takes about 17 minutes and you can rent a cart for $55 usd for the day. Prices are the about same everywhere so don't waste your time shopping it out to save 5 bucks. Things I would recommend to do on Isla Mujeres.
1. Rent cart
2. Drive to Punta Sur to take pictures and feed the iguanas
3. Go to Garrafon Park for snorkeling and ziplining
4. Visit the turtle sanctuary
5. Have lunch and spend a few hours at Zama beach club
6. Wander around town taking in the sights
7. Check out the progress of Ritchie's Spiral Island
8. Swim and sun on beautiful Playa Norte
