Default Cheap Flights from Cancun to....?

It seems I have been bitten by the travel bug again and wanderlust has set in. I am looking for information on cheaps flights from Cancun to.....where ever. Does anyone have a website(s) they use or a local travel agant who specializes in regional travel? It would be nice to fly quickly and cheaply, over a long weekend, to check out other Latin American countries or nearby islands. Anybody have a good source for me?

Can't you stick around for a bit? I rarely see you, these days.

Why not fly to Leon, and visit all the wonderful places around that boring city. Guanajuato, San Miguel, Dolores Hildalgo, Aguascalientes and Zacatecas. That ticket never costs a lot, if booked in advance.

Where should I go to look at flight schedules/prices and book the tickets? Is there a good website? Mexicana Air? I would love to explore the interior more.

I don't know how Magnicharter is doing (they were having some problems), but they offer a direct flight to Leon. From there, you can rent a car or take the bus from place to place. The nicest hotel I have ever stayed in is the Camino Real in Zacatecas. It is a bull ring converted into a hotel. Unebelievably beautiful. I also think the acqueduct system is supercool. Zacatecas does not normally make the the normal tourist maps, but I found it to be fascinating. You can also take the teleferico to a battleground where the Mexicans fought against the US. Guanajuato is my favorite city in Mexico. San Miguel is full of our paisanos, but still a great place to visit. Dolores Hidalgo is interesting, because that is where the revolution started. The museum is worth a visit.

We did all of this on our honeymoon, BTW.

What a coincidence, this is pretty much what I recommended on another forum. I agree with PDS, Guanajuato is also my favorite city in Mexico, if not the whole world, and if you haven't seen the colonial cities of Mexico you're missing the "heart of Mexico". Also, Mexico City is fantastic, IMHO. One of my best friends just took a job down there and I can't wait to visit him.

Of the cities PlayadelSoul mentioned, we've only had the pleasure of visiting one of them -- Zacatecas. We loved it! Having lived in flatlands all our lives, we loved being surrounded by hills there. We wrote about it in this blog entry. The part abut Zacatecas starts one paragraph above the photo. The only negative of the city is that they have (or had) these ancient city buses that blew out nasty, black emissions, and since Zacatecas is in a valley, there wasn't much place for the fumes to go.

A friend of ours just came back from San Miguel de Allende and is gushing about it! I've been hearing so much lately about how SMA has become so over-Americanized, I was afraid it had been ruined. I guess it's all relative though. Compared to Playa, SMA only has ONE Starbucks!

Guanajuato is a place that I would LOVE LOVE to visit! If you could swing it, I bet it'd be awesome to be there for Day of the Dead!!

It's me that is gushing about San Miguel de Allende I just got back on Saturday after spending 2 weeks there and I am in love. To me it's what Mexico should be and it also has a European feel to it at the same time. It was really fun to be there for Independence day, the fire works around the church were spectacular.

Everything is so cheap it's the motherload if you are a shopper like myself Friends who joined us used Magni airline which has flights to Leon once a week for $4000 pesos return.

We stayed in a beautiful house for $1400 US. I will try to post some pics.

Zacatecas in July when the International Folkloric Festival arrives is amazing. Actually any place in July (when Mexico travels and the families are out and about) is amazing. Zacatecas has amazing colonial architecture and the most incredible church facade we've ever seen in Mexico. You will find the Alhondigas (is that spelled correctly PDS?) in Zacatecas - (oops - it is in Guanajuato - sorry) and the museum there is amazing, especially if you've been to Hidalgo's home in Dolores Hidalgo. Zacatecas also has a mine with a very nice tour in a coverted coal/rock car. The Teleferico is touristy but still a pretty experience and amazing view of the city.

Just north of Zacatecas you will find lovely little Jerez and La Quemada, one of the most beautiful Aztec ruins we've been to.

Pictures here and here

Guanajuato is lovely and quaint. The streets are itsy and the catacombs really interesting but once is enough. Guanajuato has Diego Rivera's childhood home and well worth a visit. There are amazing mines at the upper part of the city and it is well worth a poke around up there. The drive from Guanajuato to Dolores Hidalgo is gorgeous, as is much of the Bajito. They also have the mummy museum, a beautiful hacienda and I think I broke my brain because I've forgotten what I was going to post.

I would also recommend Queretaro, the Huasteca Potosina (if you're into nature), Xalapa/Jalapa, Coatepec, Mazatlan (they are finally rennovating their downtown, but it would be down on my list unless you had a car you could use to visit some of the neighboring towns), Bernal (we haven't been there yet, but it is on my list) and believe it or not, DF. We haven't been to DF yet, but I really think it would be worth the while. Otherwise, stay in Queretaro and take a bus in. I think Queretaro is really your best bet - it is a lovely walking city and both SMA, Dolores Hidalgo, Bernal and DF are all within short(ish) driving.

I gave up trying to link photos to text, but if you're interested just go to my Flickr and search on Guanajuato, Jerez, Zacatecas or whatever. I tried to use tags pretty reasonably.

Well, now you all have me totally revved up! Looks like I'll have plenty of homework to do and some obvious "fan favorites" to look into.

Kathy - Thank you for all those amazing links. I can't wait to take my kids to all these incredible spots.

Libby - Day of the Dead would be a great time to go but the kids have a HUGE festival at school that weekend. Looks like it's Xcaret again. Not that I'm complaining.

PF - SMA is definitely on our short list!!
