Awesome site!! The first 5 catalogs that came to mind were all there!! I signed up!!

Thanks! And yep, I've been hinting about it for a bit and finally made an announcement last week. I don't feel like it will be real until my condo sells. I'm VERY nervous about the market right now. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

It will sell. All things happen for a reason !!! (keeping fingers crossed)

We use a mailing service and established a residence in the state of South Dakota. Our mail simply piles up and we get it a couple times a year (muled down or we go back). Just about everything is done online anyway and we've not had a need for immediate need of mail in 4 years.

South Dakota?
Why and how is your residence established?
Just a mailing address?

yeah, haven't you noticed all the South Dakotans here? SDakota is VERY friendly to fulltimers because they realize good revenue combined with complete lack of services provided. They take very good care of us.

We signed up with a mail service which SD calls our legal residence, changed our addy with everyone (bank, insurance, etc.) to this address and got driver's licenses there. Our mail service person is allowed to renew all our vehicle registrations and drivers license stuff and we never get Jury summonses as certain addresses are simply removed from the rolls. They have a very low tax and either no state tax or something I no longer remember. As such, all our insurances are quite low. She will scan, email or mail out any mail and notify us if something looks urgent. I think it costs around $100 a year. She'll forward our mail anytime and anywhere. Pretty soon I'm going to have her start scanning in the checks Grandma sends the kids that can never be cashed because they sit in SD for months on end and expire.

We are also planning to do the South Dakota thing. South Dakota has no personal income tax, no inheritance tax, their vehicle registration fees are low and they do not require vehicle emissions testing.

I really wish that Earth Class Mail had a SD address because I really like their service. jamnkats, Which SD mail service do you use? I was looking at this company, Alternative Resources.

We used AR for 2 years and then I finally decided to give them the boot. I really didn't like Paul's communication style (all caps), the office misplaced packages a number of times and told us they had never received them (presents for the kids), I heard awful hearsay about their privacy protection (or lack thereof) and they started adding little charges here and there without notifying you (except by placing a note in your mailbox which really helps, NOT).

So we finally switched to Terri's My Dakota Address (from memory, I'll go hunt down the URL) and she has been FABULOUS! GREAT communicator, customer service, goes the extra mile, yadda yadda. I did all the paperwork here in Mexico and faxed here a thing or two - all by email; I don't think I ever called her, but that would work also. Here she is MyDakotaAddress.com, Mail Forwarding, Mail Receiving, South Dakota Residency

I would look at the rv.net fulltimers forum for more experience - there are people who love AR but I was amazed at all the people PM'ing me with their horror stories when we switched. I'm very happy with Terri (at 1/2 the price of AR) and we'll never go back.

Interesting service. Anyone know if there's a Canadian equivalent?

How about folks who go for 3-6 months at a time?

Hi. This may be been mentioned in the previous posts, but I use a mailbox place here in Playa.
My mail is sent to a Laredo Texas address then magazines and letters etc are delived to the mailbox place next to chedari. It's been rather good so far although I do as much stuff on line as possible (bank statements, amex, investments etc).
I do love having the ability to get my favorite magazines and mail - as needed- sent to me here.

I am fortunate that my Mom helps me out with some stuff if needed. And I set up my residence in Florida b/c they have no income tax either (like South Dakota).

If you want more info let me know....

Thanks for the reply, Marissa. I think I'd like more info. I'm confused as to how you go about establishing residency in a state without actually living there. Oh...and I'd love the info on the Laredo address...not sure if I can live without my People magazine.

Hi. I will ask my friends Sherry and Leslie the name etc... Sherry set it up for me. We share a box...
Actually, I need to go there tomorrow so I will try to find out if I can set one up for you in advance...

Will let you know....

Each state has different residency requirements. South Dakota (and I think Florida) just requires an address in their state to qualify for a driver's license or state id. So, you could use a mailbox address. Some people have even said that you could get away with a hotel address. However, you do have to show up in person to apply for a driver's license/id.

Hey Libby. Did you ever sign up for a mail service? I started using Earth Class mail about a month ago and it is working like a charm! I think EVERYONE should use this service; it eliminates having mail pile up on the counter!

Didn't I read somwhere that PlayaResale also will bring mail down for you? Something about having it sent to Texas and then it gets brought down to PlayaResale....here is the info off of their page and a link.

Playa Resale | Online Store
What else? Playa Resale has a mailbox service from the United States! We recieve your stuff for you. When you want to send your stuff to Playa Del Carmen but don't trust the mail and don't want to pay those huge fees for FedEx to Mexico, Playa Resale can rent you a mailbox in Texas where your stuff can be sent. Then a Playa Resale agent takes your stuff across the border and ships it via a reliable freight service to Playa Resale. Then, when your stuff arrives, Playa Resale will notify you.

I'm glad to hear it's working out for you! I think the service is so cool, but I haven't done it yet. Did you have any trouble changing your address to a po box with credit card companies or any others? Or did you select one of their street addresses? Also, are you planning on having any mail forwarded to you in Mexico? I'd be curious to find out how expensive that is.

I'm still trying to figure out how to meeet all our mailing and residency needs. I want to establish residency in a state with no state income tax, get an online mailing service like Earth Class Mail, and get some mail forwarded to Mexico from time to time inexpensively.

At one point, I was looking at establishing a mail service with street address in South Dakota so we could establish SD residency. Using Earth Class Mail for the majority of our mail. And getting a TX address with inexpensive forwarding service, like what Playa Resale offers, for magazine subscriptions and packages. Plus we'd keep the inlaws' addres in Chicago for personal stuff, wedding invitations and such.

Four addresses got a bit complicated and expensive, and I decided not to decide anything for the time being.
