Rusty Metal Things

So, we all know that metal rusts in the humidity here. Even the frig in our rented house here is rusty! But is there anything we can do to prevent rust or at least delay the onset of it?

I know there are paints that are supposed to prevent rust, but I have some kitchen items like my new "non-oxidable" (non-rusting) stainless steel dish rack that can't be painted. Of course, the dish rack started rusting within several days of use! It'd be great if there was some type of clear rust-resistant coating you could apply to these types of items. Does this exist? In Playa? Anywhere?

Our landlord told us there is some sort of stainless steel/silver spray that people spray on their ovens here. I can just see myself trying to explain that to the guy at the hardware store. Anyone know more about this?
