Default A little scary...but all is well

News travels fast in our little town. As I am already getting phone calls about Cheri, I wanted our friends to know she is fine.

She walked outside into our garden at the house early this morning and stepped on a swarm of fire ants. She was bitten several times. By the time I got the Benydryl she had gone into anaphylatic shock. Her body began to swell, squeezing liquid into her lungs and closing up her throat. She was almost unconcious by the time we got to the hospital. Dr. Rovirosa met us there and they pumped her full of fluids, medicine to counter balance the swelling and put her on oxygen. It wasn't long before she was breathing normally again and the swelling began to lessen. She is now fine. They are keeping her under observation for the day and I will bring her home tonite.

A lesson for all of us. Careful of those nasty little buggers (fire ants) and keep the emergency numbers handy.

And a note on my wonderful bride: as I was tearing through the streets in the van heading for the hospital Cheri, even though not breathing and almost unconcious managed to say "Don't drive too fast".Women!

Oh that is horrifically scary! I have spoken to Dr. E at the clinic about plans for this same situation for me - my nemesis is the tabano. He said he'd be able to make up an epi-pen configuration but since they are so close to you guys, I wonder if that might work for you until you can get an Epi-Pen from teh US (I'm assuming you don't have one since you didn't mention it in your post). Hospiten is closer to me so we decided I'd just get to Hospiten and try to get an EpiPen from teh US next time I'm up there.

Glad she's on the mend and how horrifically scary that must have been!

Oh my God!!! Thank heavens Cheri is OK!!! What a frightening experience!!

If you can't get a Epipen in Playa, I can help here in Chicago. I have a neice who is a Doctor & can probably prescibe this. I will private message you.

Take care Cheri & Tony too!! I can only imagine how exhausted you both are with all that Adrenaline (doctor administrated for Cheri & naturally occuring in Tony)!!

Love ya,
Maureen

I'm glad to hear that Cheri is allright! I don't think they have Epi-Pens here. We asked a doctor about it after John had an allergic reaction, and she had never heard of it. John's reaction was not so severe, but I think we better get a pen when we're in the states as well!

Wow, Tony you sure stayed calm and collected to help Cheri. Quick thinking to get her medical help ASAP. It's hard when time is ticking in emergency health situations to think clearly.
Please pass on our best wishes to Cheri on a speedy recovery.
Fire ants!....yikes...you never know what can cause a reaction in all of us. Mother Nature is so beautiful but dangerous too.

Take care guys!!!! XOXO

I hope Cheri is well on her way to recovery! That's too scary. And from fire ants? Holy crap!

That definitely makes me want to make sure I have emergency numbers in my phone and get an epi-pen sooner rather than later.

"Don't drive too fast" - in that situation, I don't think you can drive fast enough!

Get well soon, Cheri!

Wow, I just saw this.

I am glad to hear Cheri is recovering and that you kept your head. I don't know if I would have been able to think so clearly. I will check in tomorrow. Let me know if you need anything.

Thank you all for your concern and well wishes for Cheri.

I just got her home from the hospital a little while ago. She is fine and is taking it easy. She's on medication for the next few days and on a restricted life for the next few weeks...only bland organic foods, no processed food or products with preservatives, little contact with any personal products containing perfume or preservatives, no prolonged exposure to sunlight...basically the girl in the bubble for a couple of weeks while her immune system settles back to normal. She has cortisone shots ready if needed but as most of you said the doctor suggested we get epi-pens from the US.

It was scary, actually scarier in hindsight. When she was going into shock the focus was on getting her to the hospital. Now we are beginning to get the shakes over what could have happened. Might need a cup of green tea soon.

Anyway, she is doing fine and sends her thanks and love to all. So do I.

OMG Tony, how scary, Im happy she is doing fine, I tried to get Epipen for my first aid kit when I was in Florida but they were very difficult and you really need to have it prescribed
Ambulances here don't carry adrenaline either, it is a very scary thought for anyone having an anaphilactic shock
So happy you rushed her to the hospital and they could help her, give her a big hug and let me know if you need anything please!
Just saw her on Sunday, walking back from Dac with her big smile and always making me feel good! She is great! Hope she is feeling better! I'm glad you posted this, will stop by tomorrow

Who in the HELL needs a cardio program when all I have to do is sign in on the occasional website to send my heart into tachycardia....SHEEESH. (Again...)

Give the girl my love and a hug and kiss, K~?
(You know, a little too long and excessive and full of the inappropriateness I'm know for...)
