We have a TelMex 2 mb Internet connection which we really like and has been very reliable. You may not be able to get it where you live, but I thought I'd mention it just in case. We also have Cablemas TV and all it took to get hooked up was an address. An English speaking representative came to our condo and explained the different options. They have also been good about fixing any problems we have had.

I imagine it is the same as most other places, i.e, comprobante de domicilio, copy of your FM and/or passport and some money.
I just changed over to the Telmex 990 peso todo incluido package with wireless. I had Infinitum before, with Telmex, and had no problems. Still trying to get my laptop to get on the wireless, though. Need to talk to someone.

Michele, I hate to be a naysayer, but are you switching from Telmex to Cablemas? We had Cablemas for about a year and a half and had SO many internet problems we eventually switched to Telmex. We had technicans out to our house probably 20 times in all that time, at least five new modems, etc. etc. It was absolutely maddening. No one seemed to be able to tell us why we lost our internet connection 20 or 30 times a day. Since we've had Telmex, we have had virtually no problems (except for the port 25 issue which is now fixed). We have Telmex at the hotel, too, and in almost three years had only one problem. I would NEVER go back to Cablemas for internet. Also, we have had relatively good luck with Telmex support people on the phone - by good luck I mean about 50% of them know what they are talking about, compared to 0% at Cablemas!

We currently have PlayaWireless and the connection is just OK, but the speed is terrible. I thought I would try Cablemas next but perhaps Telmex DSL is my answer. What's the process there? Requirements? We are already wired for phone although the service is not activated.

Go to Telmex with all the aforementioned documents and then, wait. The new plan they have is really good. Wireless internet with unlimited calls within Mexico, 990 a month.

Michele-
We have ever only used Cablemas. We refer to them as Cablemenos, for good reason. I don't recall a time when someone said something bad about the reliability or performance of Telmex. Cablemas is very frustrating sometimes. They appear to take down their network periodically, during the day, night, weekends, weekdays, etc., with no prior warning. I've had numerous conversations with people who need reliable internet access 24/7, and we all appear to share the same sentiments. We are currently paying 336 pesos/month for 2Mb down/128Kb up. Download speed has been pretty consistent. I'm rarely able to hit the max upload speed - this is very frustrating for website development! When we signed up for service 2 years ago, we could not get internet service without cable tv service. The last 2 apartments we've rented had contracts in place already, so I do not know if their policy on this has changed. Mid-December, Cablemas gave us an online notification that they were going to upgrade our service plan to 3Mb down (no indication of upload speed) at the end of the year. I just tested it and I got 2Mb/120Kb. When we get our next bill next week, I'll see if they've raised our rates regardless of the upgrade. The reason we've never switched to Telmex is that the installation time for a new line was prohibitive. If you already have lines installed, your installation may go quicker. Last year, I heard the time for a new installation was 1 month. Recently, I've heard 1 week. I'm curious to hear how things go, whichever route you take. Good luck, and may patience be one of your virtues... |

When we signed up for new service, they gave us a piece of paper to stick in our window & said someone would "stop by" in 30 to 60 days! Kinda makes that US experience of "the cable/washer repair/telephone repair etc. guy will be by between 12-4" seem like a dream. Oh, and they said that someone would bring us a modem, to our door. We both said, yeah right. The dog chewed part of the piece of paper, so I took the remains & put it in the laminator & stuck it on the front door. Sure enough, about 45 days later a guy stopped by to put in the lines. Then the next day someone actually came by and BROUGHT us a modem. To the door. Imagine that. But if you already have the lines in, Michele, I bet it will be really fast.
