Driving Directions from Texas

Hi There - I have found some driving directions to Playa Del Carmen from Houston, Texas. I was just wondering if anyone might have any directions. It seems like it would be good to have a few different sources of information. Also, is the Mexican Car Insurance recommended. I can go to Triple A and get maps as well. Also, looking into taking Spanish classes. Thanks so much for all of your help. This forum is Great!!! -Beth

I made the drive in '07
I have no idea what route I took, but I made it.
You HAVE to have Mexican insurance. You cannot cross the border without it.
You can buy it online or you can buy it at the border.

John and I have made the drive between Chicago and Playa del Carmen three times! I highly recommend you do the following.

• Use the Mexico Department of Transportation's online route planning tool. It gives you info on driving distances, driving times, tolls, etc.
  
• Buy the Guia Roji Mexico Road Atlas. This is the most accurate map I have found for Mexico.
  
• As Babaloo said, you must have car insurance for Mexico. We use Sanborn's.
  
• At the border, you will need to obtain a temporary vehicle import sticker. You can speed up the process by applying for and paying for it online. instruccionesIITV
