Cool Why do you love Playa del Carmen

When I first went to Playa del Carmen I was shocked to imagine that it was actually Mexico. The place reminded me of a little Europe located in the middle of one of the most scenic areas of the country.

The restaurants were just fantastic - I visited a few featured on this website. Of course, no trip outside the US is complete without getting some Cuban rum and cigars.

This is the kind of place I want to retire.

What to the others think?

I moved to Playa with my wife, son and nine checked bags on June 1, 2007. We all love it for a variety of reasons. I will list a few including the obvious and not in any particular order:
  • The beaches
  • Warm smiling people
  • Living without a car
  • Great food
  • Great music
  • A great expat community
  • Walmart, Sams, Office Depot (All American but nice to have)
  • Fast Internet
  • Cultural diversity
  • Reasonable cost of living
  • Great weather
I don't feel like we gave up a lot to live here. We have the essential creature comforts as well as a diverse cosmopolitan community. Come on down!

This will be our 6th trip to Mexico coming up in March...Playa to me is like going to a place that feels like home...it is more than just a vacation...it it time spent with our friends that we only get to see once or twice a year...and it means downtime for Michael and I...no work...no phones...no tv...no kiddos...Playa for us right now is our escape without the kiddos ...although one day we will take them there...but right now it is our place...warm water, soft sand, cold drinks, and sunning the twins...come on March...we are ready to get back to our home away from home.

It's the same for us too. It was the beach and the sun and the place that first attracted us, but it is the people who make this a wonderful place to live. Since we moved here we have met and gotten to know some of the best people ever!!

Judy, you look so great in that hat! You should wear hats more often.

To echo others...

For me it's the people, the weather, the general happy easy-going vibe, the lack of big-city stress & aggravation, (no more 45minute-each-way work commute!), and the way you can walk into a bar on any day of the week and find happy fun people that know you.

Maybe the Mexican government are putting Prozac in the water here or something....
No ...can't be that... cos you can't drink the water !!

ps. Judy that looks like Chris Bolister's current hat ..

Our very first trip to Playa was in 1978 when it was just a tiny fishing village, oh how things have changed. But one thing that hasn't is the wonderful friendly people of Playa Del Carmen this made me fall in love with the place way back when.I hope to continue doing so till I am old and grey. This is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Well the weather goes without saying but also: the smell, it feels homey, beach sunrises, the food, watching the locals play soccer on Sundays on the beach. Oh and you don't feel like a horrible mother having your kids out and about past 9pm. I never feel as content as I do when I'm teaching my boys to enjoy the simple things in life.......like the sunrise. It is a very special time for us.
