Default Bomberos Academy VII Annual Report 2008

A message from Brian Borjesson, Chief of the Riviera Maya Bomberos:

BOMBEROS DE LA RIVERA MAYA A.C.
ACADEMIA VII
ANNUAL REPORT
2008

Hola, Playa Del Carmen Bomberos won the State Championship BOMBEROS DE ACERO 2008. One of our Fire Fighters won the title BOMBERO DEL ANO as he had the fastest individual time on the obstacle course. Congratulations PLAYA. This was our greatest Academy. We had 20 instructors and 3 interpreters plus 77 Q. Roo fire fighters from all 6 counties of the state. For our first time we had a Woman Fire Chief from Mexico City. All the instructors had a very good time and loved the support our community showed them. They had never seen any town with so many fire shirts. The 3 legged races was a great break from work. Everyone had a really good time and came together in community support of their firemen and rose over $7,000.00 usd that we are using to buy Rescue and Hose equipment.

In this Academy, we taught the instructors from each department how to be better more interesting and organized in there courses and presentations. The course they were given was College level. They understood the course and interacted did presentations all week, the course was presented by Mike Finney he is a Iowa Chief & Instructor. Good job!

The Mechanics phase was dampened by truck motors and pump problems not to mention unavailable parts and tools made this a long week. These Colorado Fire Techs (Mechanics) are hard working and dedicated to repairing and pump testing every vehicle in this state that they can. There where 11 State Fire Fighters in the Mechanics course. They learned basic maintenance and trouble shooting pumps. There Mechanics Assoc. in Colorado has invited several Q. Roo Bomberos to attend there week long academy for Spanish speaking Mechanics the first week of July 2008.

The Rescue and fire Attack courses where nothing short of impressive. The last day we rolled the FAT LADY Fire truck in with lights and siren to a site with 2 three story building of over 200,000 sq. ft. with many hallways and offices. The first company enters to find several small fires which they extinguish. Then they find a larger 2 story fire in the next room and call for additional hose companies who enter the building from the 2nd floor and a back hallway. Once everyone is in we faked a building collapse and the rescue crews had to breach several concrete slab walls and search for the crew who was missing. The fire fighters faces where covered they could see nothing. They where on one anchor line that had knots every meter so they knew how far they where into the building and when they found two corners they two men behind the lead dog would fan out and search on there hands and knees. Once they found the victims, they would follow there anchor line back out of the building and the EMT’s would take over. It took the men from the time the truck arrived 17 minutes to find the men. Then it took 5 more minutes to remove them from the fire scene. For a total time of 22 minutes. Not bad, the best thing is when this really does happen our men will be ready with the tools and training to affect this type of rescue. Thanks again to IESF International Emergency Services Foundation for your support, equipment and Instructors. You bring professional training to Mexico.

Our most sincere thanks to our community our local web pages and the support from IESF.

It is my pleasure to serve you.
Chief Brian Borjesson
