Well, the name of the ship is the Cembay. It was carrying cement to the port of Calica. From what I can make of the news (in Spanish), they are trying to unload the cargo to dislodge the freighter from the reef. They also expect to take the freighter to Cozumel for repairs once it has been pulled from the reef.
If anyone who knows Spanish wants to try their hand at more elaborately summarizing some of the articles... here are a few from this week: Apr 23: Suspenden trasiego de cemento My summary: There was a pump failure removing cement on Tuesday, the transfer has been temporarily suspended. Apr 22: Sigue rescate del "Cembay"; APSA demandar?*a; anticipan sanciones; trasladar?*an el buque a Cozumel My summary: Someone is going to get fined heavily for the damage. Apr 21: Impacta carguero "Cembay" 2,200 m2, pero ignoran daƱos My summary: The damage area is 2,200 square meters on the Barracuda and Sabalos reefs |

According to this article, the damage done by this ship is the most serious in the history of the Riviera Maya. It says an area of 500 meters (50 meters by 10 meters) was destroyed. Not good, and I imagine it will take quite some time for it come back, if that's even possible. It's very sad and I know that the Sabalos reef was very popular. But we're lucky to have an incredible reef system off this coast, and there are still plenty of other diving and snorkeling spots available.
