Ate breakfast here my last 3 days in town. Only a few steps from my hotel room! Great food, and a great value! I loved feeding the birds the rest of my bread

Take the stairs toward Calle 14 (to the right of Studio 9) up to Jamie's.
I NEVER miss a trip up there and when Jamie's around always manage to talk with him ( a bit of a language barrier though) He says once he's decided on the subject he'll start and finish a LARGE canvas in a hour or so. Incredible!
I have one of his works here in my home office. I'm in awe!
Thanks, Libby!

These chairs, found scattered throughout Calle Corazon, double as works of art and are available for sale.

I love Calle Corazon! It truly is one of the most beautiful, tranquil streets in Playa.

We have a funny story about these chairs pictured above. My Joe goes out running rather early in the morning. While jogging through Calle Corazon, a man he assumed was a shop owner asked for his assistance. Joe, being Joe said sure what do you need. The man was bothered by the position of the furniture above & felt it had bad energy. So Joe & the guy proceeded to move the incredibly, heavy (like ironwood) furniture around until the "shopkeeper" felt satisfied is was good energy. Joe said it was a heck of a job moving those pieces! Joe was like..."Ok buddy see ya later".......The guy then proceeds to tell him he's on vacation in Playa & he lost his girlfriend hours ago....do you want to go for breakfast? Joe politely excused himself and ran on. We still laugh about the moring the guy went al "Feng Shui" on him!

We do love that beautiful steet & everytime we walk by we notice the beautiful furniture pieces & pretend/try to lift them. They are unbelievably HEAVY!! I mean really heavy lifting!!!

Thanks Libby!! We love your walks about town!

Maureen

Thanks, Popeye! I didn't think to look for stairs on the other end of the street! I'll check it out the next time I'm in the area.

Libby, when I was there last month I noticed a new business moved in where Petit Marrikesh had been. I didn't have a chance to walk down Calle Corazon to see what it is. Do you know what moved in there?

Yup, there's a new restaurant there called Monterrey Stakehouse. They sell steaks, but not stakes as far as I know. John posted about them on the restaurant thread.

Restaurant Menus - Post em' here.

My favorite street in Playa, it's sooo beautiful. Libby, Popeye directed you to the art gallery, it's a big sweeping staircase kind of, nothing fancy but I remember big & the step height was quite high for a short person like me down towards Spa Itza I believe, cool works in there.

Thanks. I did not see John's post about this. Since our work has blocked this website from us, I don't get to read nearly as much anymore. It really sucks. I guess they want us to do some work or something.

I love this thread, Libby. Thanks for those pics of the signs and all of the historical info on Playa.

It's the subversive element that you let hang around the forum.

We went up too, and I spent a good deal of time oo-ing and aw-ing over his enormous canvases. I really liked one he did of a small mayan child's face...he just captured so much emotion in a painting!

Well that's completely unreasonable. My place of employment is like that, too. I don't know why they won't pay me to do whatever I feel like doing!

Default First Taste of Playa

Read this post in blog format.

For many new visitors to the Riviera Maya, the first glimpse of Playa del Carmen is at the ferry dock and adjacent shopping mall. There are the Cozumel vacationers, mostly staying in all-inclusive resorts, who come over on the ferry for a day trip. There are the cruise ship passengers -- many coming from Cozumel for the day, and others arriving in the Calica port, south of Playa, and taking an "excursion" to town. Finally, there are the those staying at all-inclusive resorts up and down the Riviera Maya coast. They are dutifully transported to town and dropped off in the "safe for gringos" area by the shopping mall.

Here is what they see.

Arriving at the ferry terminal from Cozumel. Walk straight up this hill to the modern Paseo del Carmen mall.

The tricycle taxis arrive to take their fares and/or their luggage to nearby hotels. This works out great if you're staying on the pedestrian only 5th Avenue.

Senor Frogs Bar & Restaurant is right at the ferry pier. Senor Frogs is known for their large, colorful plastic yards in which they serve cervezas, margaritas, Sex on the Beach, and just about anything else you can think of.

Forgot your swimsuit, tennis shoes, shorts? No problem, you can find it at Marti Sports store.

If you ever make it out of Senor Frogs, you might end up at Carlos & Charlie's next for a very similar experience.

Rolandi's is a nice Italian restaurant with great pizza.

Sushi in Mexico. No extra charge for the cream cheese they put in your rolls.

What a cool jewelry and art store this is.

La Bodeguita del Medio
is a Cuban bar and restaurant known for their mojitos and live salsa bands and dancing.

Why in the world would there be an American Apparel here in Mexico? I'm told that the Europeans love it!

Starbucks ... it's everywhere

We ate at Johnny Rockets once with friends who were visiting. They love this chain restaurant in the states, but were quite disappointed with the Playa version. We also were not impressed.

$5 T-shirts

For some, it's time now to buy return tickets ...

and get back to Cozumel

For the others, I'll be continuing the tour proximante (soon).
