Default Things to do in Playa

Ok we've done the Fat Cat Cruise, XelHa, Xcaret, Tulum Ruins, beach at Tulum, done a little sight seeing on Cozumel, Chitzen Itza....

We are looking for a day trip or two but arent sure what some of the other really fun things there are in the area. Are there any "hidden gems" or cant miss type things that we havent hit yet? I am sure there must be some other great things to do that we just dont know about, so if you have anything thats really neato or outstanding please share!

Puerto Morelos has always been a favorite daytrip for us, but keep in mind that we haven't been down since the Xmas after Wilma. If you like snorkeling, there are tours out to the reef right off the main pier. There's casual shopping in the town square, and several good restaurants. If you google Alma Libre bookstore and check out their website, you should get some good hints.

Also, if you've never spent time on XpuHa, it's a beautiful beach, with good snorkeling right offshore. We used to like going to Cafe del Mar, but that has closed. You could try using La Playa Beach Club as your starting point, then just wander up and down the beach.

It sounded like JimmyMN had some good suggestions for Monica for the Tulum beach area.

One thing I definitely intend to do next time I'm down there -- in the "while it's still there" category -- is to take a day tour of Sian Ka'an.

Is Formula One still in existence? That sounded pretty fun -- carbon footprint issues aside!

Thanks for the suggestions!

My wife would like to try the Sian Ka'an thingy but I always thought it was pretty far away from Playa...more like an overnight trip. Is it something you could do in a day trip???

We spoke only casually to a guy who ran a tour kiosk down in Tulum Pueblo. It was my understanding that you would have to get down to Tulum Pueblo fairly early in the am; but if you did, yes, you could arrange for a day trip.

Go cenote snorkeling at Hidden Worlds.

Snorkel in the clear lagoon at Yal-Ku in Akumal.

Check out the dry caves and monkeys at Aktun Chen.

Have an interactive animal experience at Crococun Zoo. Great for kids.

Take the ferry to Cozumel, rent a jeep and drive around the island. End your day at the No Name Bar at the Barracuda Hotel for a sunset view.

It can be done in a day. You just need an early start. We've never taken a tour, but we've made the trip 3 times. You can read about our adventures here, here and here. See our pictures here.

There is a nice video of the F-1 Tour HERE plus you can reserve your tour early by PayPal if you like. For those who don't know, during this tour, you and a small tour group will snorkel with giant sea turtles, explore inlets with Mayan ruins, visit deserted beaches and enjoy a light meal at a restaurant on the beach.

What about the zip line and cycle thing Tony & Cheri talked about on their blog. That sounds like lots of fun. Just PM them and they can tell you all about it.

Since I just commented on the deelish grilled fish at Playa Lancheros elsewhere....might I suggest.....

Heading over to Isla Mujeres for the day, renting a golf cart and exploring the island? And yes, stopping at Playa Lancheros for the whole grilled fish for lunch is a must.

I will second that. Isla Mujeres is an easy day trip from Playa and surprizingly very different. Head over early in the morning, rent a golf cart for the day and explore. A good website to check out is www.islamujeres.info.

I think we are off season for the whale sharks, but yes, you can very easily do that from Isla Mujeres and from Playa as well. I believe the season runs from May to September. That is on my list of things to do this year!
