I went to a fabric shop once with a friend who lives there, but I don't remember the exact address...it was near Super Maz or something. SOrry I'm not of much help...they didn't have anything out of the ordinary anyway, nothing you wouldn't find the same of back home.
I have to say though, I think your username is the best!!

Welcome to the Roo.
And Ginger is right-----great name ![]() I wonder if there might be a fabric store in the shopping mall (can't remember the name- any locals help me out here) where the free bus from ASP drops you off. Oh and you might want to change your email address to at instead of @ to prevent being spammed. Nora |

I'm no fabric expert but if your mom is into batiks I'm not sure that she'll find what she's looking for in the shops that locals go to. They sell a lot of cheap polyesters. Assis on the corner of 30th Avenue and Calle 34 has the best selection with some nicer options, in my opinion. This is the one Ginger was referring to. There is also Supertelas in the Plaza Las Perlas mall on Constituyentes and 20th Avenue; not as good. Both are in Playa del Carmen, about 20 kilometers north of the Aventura Spa Palace. I don't know of anything that would be closer to ASP.
Shopping at the fabric stores here is quite an experience. When you find the fabric you want, you'll need to get someone to assist you. Tell them how many meters you want and they'll cut it off the roll to your specifications. Then they will write you a nota (receipt), and they will either deliver your fabric to the pick-up counter or instruct you to deliver it there. Then you must go to to the cajero (cashier) and present your nota and payment. I believe they stamp your nota as paid and then you can return to the pick-up counter to retrieve your fabric. Phew! You made it!

(Maybe an entrepeneur could think about opening a fabric store in a mall there if they are geared to the local shoppers.) Editted to ask-------what about Walmart? The Walmart here where I live has a Large fabric selection. Nora |

If you get to Cancun, yes it is a bit of a hike from where you will be, on Avenida Tulum, just north of the ADO bus station, on the east side of the street is a Mc Donalds, then to the north of that is a shopping center, with a 2 story fabric shop. We picked up 6-7 peices of oilcloth, with very tropical patterns to use as tableclothes, on the patio table....can't recall the name, but when you get to that area, ask around...thats what we did....good luck!

I walked by the Assis fabric shop today and took a few shots.
![]() They are open Monday - Saturday 9am - 9pm, and accept Visa, Mastercard & American Express. They were of course closed today but I got a few shots of their fabrics through the windows. Sorry the pics aren't very good because of the glare. It's been a while since I've been at this shop, and some of the fabrics looked even nicer than I had remembered. ![]() ![]()

Hmm ... good question. They definitely have the types of fabrics that you use for drapes. They'll even make your drapes to order. People definitely buy fabrics there to make clothing with. But I don't know anything about quilting, so I don't think I'm qualified to answer your question. Sorry I can't help.

There is also a large 2-story fabric store in the Los Perles Mall at Constituentes and 20th Av. They have drapery material, rods and rings. They also have materials suitable for quilting.

With Ruth being a seamstress and quilter, we had to peek inside one time. Can't comment on much else (quality/pricing) as they were closed... |
