Beer Bucket Update

The Beer Bucket officially changed hands on May 13th. Sharky & Capt. Ron's Caribbean Shack is no more. It will now be known as Big Al & Redneck Steve's Beer Bucket. The new owners are cleaning up the joint this week -- powerwashing and painting -- in anticipation of the grand opening on May 23rd.

Big Al is a radio dj from Dallas and Redneck Steve is ... well ... um ... a redneck. There's also a guy named Duke involved in the project and a British chap named Jez who many of you will know. So despite the cleanup it seems that the place will still be full of characters.

I went by the Bucket yesterday and snapped a few pictures of the renovation in progress. Jez graciously invited me in and gave me the lowdown.

The old metal overhang on the first floor has been replaced with a fresh palapa awning.

Notice all the paint buckets lined up.

A good cleaning and a few fresh coats of paint have really brightened up the place.

Jez tells me that they'll be serving food within a couple of months -- burgers fries & such, and will have regular barbecue events. They also have some plans to really open up the space by taking advantage of some previously unused and underutilized spaces. Did ya know that there's actually an unused apartment behind the Bucket on the first floor? I didn't. Oh and Jez assures me that new Beer Bucket will be kept very clean!

Wow, thanks Libby, it's so cool that you guys actually live in Playa and keep us all up to date. I feel like I'm in Playa here!!!

I was there when Ron locked up for the very last time.

He did drive away in a car crammed with beautiful women, though, so he seemed pretty happy!

Duke seems a really cool guy. He's been talking to people and getting some feedback from us "locals" and people in town. Can't wait for the Bucket to open, 10th seems so dark at night without it's bright lights!

Also I forgot to mention that all 4 of the Bucket's bartenders will be coming back to work at the new Beer Bucket.

I stopped by the Beer Bucket again today. They are planning (and hoping and praying) for an opening date of Saturday, May 24th. The work will be done. It's just a matter of whether the government will sign off on all the permits in time.

The new Beer Bucket signs are up -- makes it seem much more real now! Jez showed me the improved downstairs bathroom. Still nothing fancy, but it's been power-washed and painted bright white. And it has an exhaust fan!

Here's a few pictures I took.

The bar has been lowered by about a foot, and lots of fans have been installed.

The TV will be upstairs for now.

According to Big Al's blog, the following events will take place this weekend. I have not been able to confirm this with anyone else.

I like the lowered bar, now I can see over it and the barstools have been modified too!
