Default Any issues flying to Mexico City then Cancun?

Been looking at rates and have noticed that most of the flights that are available from San Francisco airport fly either to Mexico City or Guadalejara, then to Cancun. Has anyone ever had any issues flying to these airports and changing planes? I have never had to connect outside the U.S.

I've flown from Chicago to Cancun via Mexico City before. No issues at all. Just go online and familiarize yourself with the layout of the airport. You arrive in the International Hall and you will have to go through Immigration.

Once you leave the Customs area, they may ask where your luggage is, but just explain that you are flying on to Cancun and your luggage was checked through.

Once you exit the International Hall, go left and find the Hall your plane will be departing from (mine was Hall B). When you arrive in Cancun, your luggage will be marked with an orange sticker indicating that it has not gone through Customs yet. They will ask you to hit the Red/Green light. And then you can proceed.

What Vanessa said, but I think Mexico City can be pretty confusing. If you have a tendency to just follow all the ther gringos off the plane without paying much attention to where you're going, you may not be able to do that in Mexico City. It probably depends on which airline you take. We've always flown with Mexicana through Mexico City, and almost all the passengers are Mexicans.

As soon as you get through Immigration (look for the Migracion signs), find the hall that Vanessa mentioned. This is the only place where you can find out which gate you're at. It's a little bit of an adventure.

I don't find Mexico City airport much different than, say, Houston or Miami. However, it does have a history and a reputation of being worked by pickpockets and thieves. Guard your valuables and your carry-on. My wife had a little bag stolen in the bathroom there a few years ago.

Thanks for the information. I guess my biggest concern when I think about it, is changing planes in Mexico without being fluent in Spanish. I supposed that information is readily enough in English. It would be Mexicana airlines as well.
