Default Milk Question

We are bringing our 1 year old son with us later this month. The doctor told us he is only suppose to drink pasteurized milk. I just want to make sure that the milk in Playa is pasteurized. Except for in my coffee, I don't think I've ever had milk there.

The milk here is ultra-pasturized to make it shelf stable. You are good to go!

You see a lot of milk here in the grocery stores in boxes on the shelves (not in a refrigerated section). This ultrapasteurized milk has been quickly heated to about 300°F, then vacuum-packed. It may be stored without refrigeration for up to 6 months until opened. We like it, and buy it by the case from Sam's Club. You can also buy pasteurized milk in a carton in the refrigerated section at Walmart.

While we are on the subject, what brand is your favorite? I have gone from San Marcos to WalMart to Lala. Pretty much sticking to Lala, after a bad box of WalMart Great Value (which I liked up until that point). San Marcos is my back up leche.

My kids aren't particular. Generally, we buy LaLa or LacDel.

I hate to admit this, but I am actually afraid to drink some brands, solely based on their cartons (or names). LacDel falls into that category.

I prefer Lala. I'm a skim milk fan, and Lala Silhouette is the closest thing to it available here. Plus, I like the plastic tab found on the Lala cartons that makes it easier to pour than the ones that you have to cut. Still, I always spill a bit the first few times I pour a new carton.

I do better with the cartons I have to cut open. Part of my buying decision actually. The plastic spouts always dribble on the counter.

Default organic

we buy the organic milk from Wal-Mart. We get that and Silk SoyMilk in both Vanilla and Unflavored. I'm beginning to think I can just go with the Silk, the unflavored is great with granola and the Vanilla does nice things to a cup of coffee. BTW I hate that plastic tab on Lala cartons, always spills and I just cut the corner anyway.

I guess it's all in how you cut it. I remember the first time we bought one of those cartons that have to cut to be opened. I think it was for a salsa. It indicated that you should just pull at the lines. We pulled and pulled and nothing. Grade school memories of reluctant pints of milk came pouring back to us. I don't think we even had a pair of scissors back then. Somehow we have 3 now. How does that happen?!

I prefer the cut boxes, too. I use my teeth.

Costco had cases of organic milk at $179 a case, but last time we went to stock up they were out. Dunno if they'll order again, but it was nice to give the kids organic.

I looked everywhere for organic granola and couldn't find anything else than the standard Quaker stuff which is way too sweet for me. Do you know where to find good granola?

Try Dac on 30th Ave. just north of Constituyentes.
