Default Just Drinks?

Hey all,

There are so many wonderful restaurant recommendations here, but I'm interested to hear everyone's favorite place to go for cocktails in Playa, Tulum, Akumal (and everywhere in between)?

Also, what speciality drinks do you like that the area or a certain place is known for? Happy to travel to hidden, out of the way places (we're determined to be more adventurous on our second trip!) Last year I fell in love with Micheladas...

Thanks!

Melanie

Luna Blue's bar is great! I love sitting in the swings and listening to JB. Also, I still love the Bucket and much to my surprise I really enjoyed the Tequilla Barrel this last trip. It had good music and great people watching, oh and the fries, they're probably done in lard but DAMN were they good Then for on the beach, El Pirata and Bad Boys.

Since my favorite Luna Blue Bar has been mentioned I will suggest another favorite of mine...Bourbon Street...they make a mean mojito and it's fun to watch the people walk down 5th while you sip away!

For the mere experience... you should at least try the offerings at one of the mezcallerias. Mezcalinna on Calle12 between 1st Avenue and the Blue Parrot has a good basic shot of mezcal. Smart idea to be on the buddy system when you sample it. If I recall correctly, next door to George & Dragon (north end) is a new mezcalleria with a designer touch... mostly for the sophisticated mezcal drinker.

If you grow tired of beer, mojitos, and margaritas... most bars in Playa carry Sambuca (usually under the label Vaccari). A shot of that goes great with a cappucino (that combo is more easily found on the north end).

For wine, Da Vino (corner of 5th Avenue & Calle12) has some extremely good house wines. The prices go upwards from there.

If you're lucky enough to find yourself at La Zebra (Tulum) on a Sunday evening, you'll discover a fabulous salsa party. During the event, they put lots of emphasis on their mojitos which were extremely good last time I was there... and I've sampled enough of them to make a comparison. The afternoon bartender at Fusion is also an experienced mojito creator... he gained plenty of experience making caipirinhas at Capitan Tutix when it was still in existence.

Thanks, Jimmy. I want to spend more time in Tulum this trip.

I take it Mezcal is a bit dangerous? I've never tried it...

Mezcal is an interesting drink that often doubles as paint remover. It, not tequila, is the stuff with a worm (or sometimes a scorpion) in the bottom of the bottle. Dangerous? I once combined a bottle of Mezcal , friends and a hotub and I'm still here. Of course I no longer drink, have memory lapses and walk with a slight limp from permanent muscle damage. But dangerous? Not at all.

For mojitos check out the ones Jose makes at our place. I don't care for mojitos myself (or at least I didn't when I was drinking ) but those who like them wax downright romantic about his creations.

Gotcha. I think I'll be steering clear of that one.

But I will definetely be stopping by the Blue. And I love mojitos!
