Hi Rubie,
I don't know if this listing (below) is current. It is an adorable cafe in a great part of town. Rubie, thanks for asking your questions here, I hope some other locals on In The Roo will be able to help you. Owning and operating a restaurant is not something that I am familiar with. All I can provide is my opinion of the restaurant scene here.
Are there restaurants for sale here? Yes, plenty. Restaurant turnover is quite high and there always appears to be some available. Since you and your boyfriend have some experience in the restaurant business, it will come as no shock to you that running a restaurant business here in Playa del Carmen is not going to be easy. I am not sure what causes the high rate of failure here, but I'd guess it's related to the following issues: 1) People spend too much of their money upfront, spending too much money on their location, and too little money thinking about how they are going to differentiate themselves from other restaurants available here. I wish I kept track of how many restaurants I've seen come and go in less than 3 months time. 2) Quality and consistency of the food available in town varies greatly on a day to day basis. The more established players tend to get the good stuff while the remainder goes to the new guys. How will your restaurant cope? What ingredients do you need - and do you know how you're going to get them on a regular basis? 3) Employee turnover is very high. You may spend weeks or months training your employees to do things in a manner in which you like, only to find that they are working for your competitor next week for the same or less money. The sign of a good (consistent) restaurant here is one where employee turnover is very low. Check to see how other businesses manage to keep their employees and you may be one of the rare success stories. Please don't let me or my opinions discourage you! As I said, this is just my opinion, and I know next to nothing about running a successful restaurant here. With that said, there are many niches here that have yet to be filled. Do your homework and you may be very successful. If/when you have more specific questions about running a business here, feel free to ask them here. That's something a lot more people here can definitely chime in about.

Owning and running a business is no guarantee that you'll actually be able to work for it. If you only plan to manage your business, you are fine... but being the chef, bussing tables, and a variety of other restaurant jobs may be impossible for you to do here.

Just my opinion, but there are way too many Italian restuarants there and I haven't found one I like yet.
I think Playa needs a really good old fashion, greasy hamburger place/grill. (at a reasonable price) Anybody remember that great hot dog place on 10th or 12th? You could put just about put anything on them..bacon bits, potato chips, grilled onions and some strange things that you would never think to put on a hot dog. And.. they stayed open late. They need more late night places that stay open till 4 am. Alot of tourists wait till after 10pm to go out and hit the clubs and they are hungry for food other than pizza. |

It’s not 100 % that we will go trough whit this venture, the only thing that is, we are coming in a month. There are other things we our looking into. So John I am curious about the niches that you see if you ever considered talking about it. Like my boyfriend says it is a very tuff business not only in Playa. At first he did not even considered doing a restaurant identifying the problem’s he would encounter in Playa. He was not only a restaurant owner but also a consultant in the restaurant business so he as a different approach. He tries to look for the con's before the pro's then what are the solutions. So one of the main reason so many restaurant open and close(and that is everywhere) it's because lots a people think because they know how to cook and have a lots of friends it should be a guaranteed success..............wrong!!! So now he's thinking that he might have found a niche, a concept that is very different but then again very simple something that most of the people here in the roo could relate too and other's could discover. So that being said, It would most appreciated to get more input from all of you as of what do you think is missing, what are your favourite meals etc… and trust me, if we decided to go forward with this you will all be invented for our test meal to get to know you and get your opinions before opening. I very happy you all took some time to reply and looking forward to meet all of you. Rubie |

If I could do what I wanted, I would open up a restaurant that served American style breakfasts, and it would be open from say 12 midnight to around 2 pm or so. That way folks coming from the bars and craving a late night breakfast could go there, as well as people wanting breakfast at a normal hour. It would be a diner style - you know how everyone has their favorite greasy spoon place to go for breakfast on weekends? A place like that.

Sue, great idea. I'm not an egg lover, so a place that specializes in pancakes, french toast, and waffles would be great for me. I think the midnight to 2 timing is good also, although I'd love an IHOP or Waffle House type place that's open 24 hours.
Another niche would be a build your own salad place. There was one called Mondo Natura Salad Bar a while back, but it fell into the "closed within 3 months" category. I think their problem was location (5th Ave and Calle 30)... you can't have that much quality food if you aren't getting good turnover. Hot dogs, chili dogs, hamburgers, (Italian) beef sandwiches would appease the ex-pats, at least from the States. I'm not sure how well it'd fare with tourists. Then again, McDonalds, Burger King, Papa John's, and Dominoes appear to be doing alright, so why not a doggie diner? Again, there was a place on 10th Avenue between Calles 8 and 10 that did just this. Unfortunately, the owner had some issues and had to close. Oddly enough, that location was vacated by another niche restaurant called Frito. It was a french fry place that served mostly french fries and a small selection of "side orders" (chicken fingers, etc). They were awesome, but closed due to family obligations elsewhere. There is now a new french fry place called KB Chips on 5th by Calle 24 that is trying something similar. Their prices are quite high - 35 pesos for french fries . The night Libby and I went around 12:30am, their fries were inedible. A quick sandwich shop would also be on my list of potential successes. We like Coffee Cafe and Il Panino, although waiting 10 minutes for a sandwich gets old after a while. Coffee Cafe has been pushing their pre-made sandwiches and bagel sandwiches the last 2 times we were there, so they may soon be off our regular meal schedule. There are numerous Subways in town, but their meats sometimes scare (goes for their restaurants in the States as well). I'm sure I'll add more as I have cravings that I can't appease. Oh yeah, can you open a KFC in Playa del Carmen??? Please? Driving to Cancun for fried chicken makes us look a bit sad.
