Default Carnaval in Playa del Carmen?

Does anyone know when Carnival will begin in Playa this year. We have heard about the colorful parades, but haven't been here for it in the past.

it's been moved so as not to conflict with the elections
Cozumel's carnival is Jan 23-30 - Playa's is probably the same.

This site has information about Cozumel's Carnaval. It is January 23rd - 30th as Babaloo said. Not sure about Playa del Carmen. It always seems to get announced at the last minute.

If you can, definitely go check out the Carnaval celebrations on Cozumel. They put on a good party. There are several music stages. At night after the parade (and after all the cruise shippers get back on their boats), everyone's dancing in the streets having a great time. Really cool vibe!

Potentially stupid question & I know it really doesn't have much to do with Carnaval......but has been brought up in the thread.

Anyway disclaimer aside.......Are ex-pats allowed to vote in the election? I would obviously guess that those on a FM3 would not be but what if you get your permenent residency? (or whatever that is called) Just curious!

Nope. You have to be a citizen to vote. The full residency status that you can apply for after 5 years on an FM-3 is called the FM-2. But even with an FM-2, you cannot vote.

Thanks Babaloo and Libby. Good site for the Cozumel Carnaval. It sounds like a lot of fun!

Kelli and I gave up our traditional New Orleans trip for Mardi Gras in order to travel to Playa for Carnival.

Just a few weeks ago we find out that carnival is moved up by a week.

Bummer.

But hey, we're still in Mexico!

Well, Playa didn't do Carnaval last week, so I'm wondering if anyone has heard any new information about when it will be?

I made them an offer they couldn't refuse...

In all seriousness, if the parades were not last weekend and they are not tomorrow, this could be good news for us, right? I mean, they may go ahead and have them when they are supposed to?

I hope I'm not imposing on y'all locals to see if you can let me know if you hear of anything...

Thanks!

If we find out anything, I'll be glad to post it here, Stew. We have never been here this time of year before, so we've never seen it. I'll be bummed if they don't do it this year.

They've just gotta do it!!!

I've never been down for Carnival, but it's on my list.

Slightly off-topic but still keeping with the Carnival theme, I am extremely jealous of my father-in-law who is leaving Friday for 10 days in Brazil........... I wonder if I could fit in his luggage??

Perhaps...but have you seen the man pack?!

I thought I was a bit over zealous when it came to packing for a vacation, but I think the man has me beat!
