What can I expect to pay for cheap bikes in Playa del Carmen? Does the walmart sell inexpensive bikes?
I've seen rental rates in guidebooks and online for $16/day, $72/week. We will be renting our bikes for 10 days. In the US I can buy a cheap preassembled bike for $60 at WalMart, which would be much cheaper than a rental fee. Is there a WalMart type solution in Playa del Carmen? |

from Walmart at home and pay for the extra baggage. Depending on the airline $15 one way and offer it around Playa for a "great" price. At least you'd know what you are riding on. Some airlines allow free baggage for golf clubs etc. but this was before the big fuel/pay to book a seat/pay for your luggage deals.

WalMart does have a selection. Most of their bikes are for kids. If you keep going down the highway in the direction of Tulum (away from Cancun) you will pass the Sam's Club on your left, just past the Playacar entrance. The next light, make a right into Centro Maya. If you are facing the mall, the first store on the left is Coppel. I got a decent Mt. type bike there for about $80.
As for bringing down your bike from the US. Check on that first. I was going to bring my bike down when we moved here and decided not...it is not the price of a piece of checked baggage. You have to look under or ask about their special cargo prices. Most airlines have packaging directions (pedals in, handelbars sideways...or everything seriously wrapped in bubble wrap) and I found it was going to cost me between $100 - $150 to get it on the plane. Good luck! Renting might make more sense in case something goes wrong while you are here. There is at least one good bike repair guy I have used but the hassel of dealing with that vs. just taking it back to the shop you rented from and changing it out might make more sense. |

last time we took our golf clubs, (I know things have changed) but they were considered sports equipment and as we picked them up, we saw several people getting their bikes. No bubble wrap, just a "luggage type tag" on the bikes.

there are many bike shops on 30th b/n 22 and 28th. you can buy a beach bike for around $80 usd.
Some very nice people bought one to use while in town then donated them to the pet shelter afterwards. who in turn sold them. It's easy to buy one. And I would be happy to help you if/when you need help
