Default Small Beach Hotels

When I was in Playa in Feb, we stayed at Fusion, which I thought at the time was great. I think I had read about some management changes and so on and people weren't liking it to well after that. Any recommendations for small hotels on the beach? A lot of people seem to like Playa Maya, we had lunch there in Feb and IT WAS FANTASTIC!We won't be there for long so I want as much beach as I can get!

Yes, you are right, alot of folks like Playa Maya. We have never stayed there but we love to stop in and eat at their beach restaurant. This is the first spot that we head to for our first lunch in Playa. Gotta have my coconut shrimp fix!

For our upcoming trip to Playa, we will be staying at Playa Palms Hotel. This will be the first time that we've ever stayed in a beachfront hotel. Luna Blue Hotel is our preferred hotel and has become our home away from home. It is not beachfront but we just love it! And of course Tony & Cheri are the best hosts! It's just a few minutes walk to the nicest beaches in town, close to all the action. It's nice to come home to a quieter refuge after all that partying.

The coconut shrimp and the fish tacos are the most delicious! I do have Luna Blue, (would love to have a drink at their new bar!) and a couple of others off the beach in my mind as well.

Here are a few options. I'm sure I'm missing something.

Hotel Mimi del Mar
Hotel Alhambra
Playa Maya
Mosquito Beach
Playa Palms

I've seen rooms at the Hotel Alhambra and the Playa Plams. Both are very nice. The food at Playa Maya is excellent, and I hear great things about the hotel. Good luck.

I wonder if all the rooms have been renovated already at Playa Palms?
Have you heard anything Libby?

We stay every year at the Colibri. The rates are very reasonable, the rooms are simple and clean and its just...well its perfect for us as we sleep and clean up in our rooms and the other 16 hours a day we arent there. This will be our 6th year there.

You know, I'm not sure. But I will find out for you.

Oops, I missed the Hotel Colibri. Thanks, Kirbyfan.

And the Mimi del Mar is on the beach between 4th and 2nd. I gotta run right now, but I'll add it to our directory soon.

Thank you Libby. But please do not go out of your way. I was just curious, besides, we'll be happy with whatever we get I'm sure. Just to have my toes in the warm sand is good enough for me. Oh...with a Michelada or Margarita in hand? Even better. Ahhh...

I have not stayed there, but a frequent poster on TA, Zsa Zsa, stayed there and gave it a thumbs up and I believe she wrote a review as well.. Great location too.

I have stayed at PM and the Alhambra and would recomend either one.

In October Playa Palms looked pretty good, with some rooms being used. I think they were near done with the room renovations, but I cant be for sure. We checked out one of them near the back, it looked great!

If you get a chance, get a brochure, I heard they are really good!

Playa Palms looks very nice on their website. The guys in our group wouldn't stay at a hotel that didn't have a t.v. and they wanted to be on the beach and wanted a pool too! Cripes... None of them have ever been to Playa, they only stay at top notch AI's when they vacation, so it was hard for me to explain that it didn't matter if you stay off beach because everything is so close. I just hope that they will be happy with everything. I would have prefered the more quiet north end with the more beautiful beaches but they wanted to be close to the action.

Party Central here we come!!

I just heard back from Helge, the manager at Playa Palms. He tells me that the renovations were completed just before Christmas. Among other improvements, all the rooms have brand new furniture.

We stay at Playa Maya..........it's beach front and the beach is why we are there. We enjoy the staff a little better each time. If you don't care about beach front, I would go for Luna Blue (assuming you aren't bringing kids). We travel with our boys (5 and 7), so Luna is out for us.

Smile Small Beach Hotels

We've stayed at the Playa Maya about six times - has everything we could want in a Playa vacation. Amenities we don't use...plasma tv & dvd, some that we do, beach front restaurant, pool, laundry service, and internet workstation. Very personable staff and rooms are very clean. We used to stay at the Pelicano Inn but they had numerous mgmt/owner changes (during the course of 5 years or so) which caused us to look elsewhere as the hotel became more run down. Have not considered switching from PM to anywhere else.
