Default Stupid Tourist Traps in Playa

Ok, we've all seen 'em - those silly things shops and restaurants do to attract your attention. Whether they're monkeys on a leash or Spider Man... they're here, and unfortunately, becoming much more prevalent. Got any pictures and comments to share?

Here's one that popped up a few weeks ago... outside of Aca Los Tacos. What an electronic skeleton pirate has to do with tacos is a mystery to me. Also, this electronic pirate has his own tip jar, which I've actually seen people putting money into.

There's no tourist trap that's sillier or more irritating than the street hawkers on 5th Ave., IMHO. I know they gotta make a living, but some of them just take it to ridiculous levels. I took this photo on our recent trip. I like this place on 14th St.:

I saw this guy and it was like 100 degrees out. All I could think was he must be really desparate to stand there in that get up when it's that hot!!

Well, I originally thought it was a person. But, after seeing it there at all hours of the day and always making the same movement, I'm fairly certain it's robotic. That's why I'm confused why people would put money in the tip jar.

Not that it means anything, but there is an electrical cord hanging out of the back of the platform Mr. Skeleton is standing on.

Electronic pirate skeletons have a long history of promoting taco sales. Recognize!

I'm scared of that painted bird guy.

Yeah, no sense in providing a place for kids or the multitude of workers looking for a quick and cheap place to eat. Should open another bar, in its place, as there can never be enough of those.

Actually McDonalds in mexico is expensive in comparison to Canada or the US. But they did have a really great burger in 2004 when the olympics were on, that they didn't make up here.

I gotta agree. Compared to $0.40 tacos, McDonald's is pretty expensive. But I think Beachnutt is referring to the McDonald's down at 5th Avenue & Juarez. The few times I've been there, I've only seen tourists.

My biggest peeve is BOTTLED WATER. They got you by the balls. Every restaurant charges 20 - 30 pesos for a small bottle of water. Out of hand IMO.

The "photographers" who ask if you want your picture taken and then come back to sell you your picture on a Corona bottle. Best answer is to say "I already have one." They walk away and don't try to talk you into buying one.

The guys selling roses. More and more everytime we go.

What's up with the balloon clowns all over 5th Ave last time I was there?

Every band that plays at a bar has to come around for "tips" for the band. You see the same bands every day. And every day they ask the same people for tips. I have no problem if I stop a musician on the street but it gets very old when you are trying to enjoy a drink at a bar and you have these band guys constantly sticking a tip hat in front of your face, especially when most of the bands aren't very good.

Tips in general in Playa are way out of hand. Compared to 8 years ago when I first went to Playa more and more people have their hand out for tips.
