If you know the zone fares, you just get in, tell him where you are going, and pay the fare when you get out according to the chart. No asking, no giving him a chance to up the fare price. I found when we lived there we did this and saved a lot in taxi fares, versus when we would vacation there and just ask before getting in. Louise, I know that Laura's maps have an updated fee schdule for the taxis.

I have lived here for five months and have learned (rather quickly) that if you ask it is rarely the same price twice! I also learned that if you get one of the parked taxi's you automatically are charged an extra 20 peso. I agree that walking up to 10th is easier and reduces the fare. It is easiest if you know the rates and then just hand the driver the money. Enjoy your stay!
