That is such a sweet story, Maureen. I know you are very proud of her.
What a beautiful little girl!

Maureena5 in the background and Jen's back in the foreground. Maureen, which dog are you holding here?
Sophie. What a poser. Sophie's been there since she was a puppy. She and her sister arrived too sick to stand or feed themselves. Sadly, her sister didn't make it, but Sophie turned out to be a wonderful, healthy dog. Very good natured. Ahhh! Puppies need their sun rays too. |

Oh Libby...what fabulous photos!! Thanks for posting them. I still don't have any clue which pup I was holding!?!!
I love the photo of Tasha!..Was it John taking the photo...can you see those intense eyes....she loves John too! Have you heard the lastest great news?.....Ellie, the very first rescue, one of the oldest dogs, the sweet little girl that I fostered for a short time was adopted by a very loving couple who totally fell in love with her. I cried tears of joy when I heard this!!..for real.I cried! There is nothing like that kind of "cry"!!!! Thanks Libby for all your support & all the dog food! You guys are the best! I will always remember very fondly a statement you made to me at the first dog wash. You were cuddling poor "skin & bones" Tasha" & you said "I always feel for the underdog". For me, that said a whole lot about your character & I have much respect for you, mi amiga!! (John too!!) Maureen |

Happy to see this thread!
Andy, the kids are still collecting bottles here and there for the pet shelter, looks like we are coming in July so they will deliver to you then. Unfortunately, bottles are not worth TOO much, but it will be enough to help a little bit I"m sure. |

Now on to Happy News!!!....I've been doing a bit of grant writing with Andy & Jen's input. We received news just this week that we are going to receive a monetary award ($1000 US) from the SPCA International!!! We will be named "Shelter of the Week" on the SPCA International website. Along with the monetary award we will be featured on their website. They are a bit back-logged with applications so our award is scheduled for August. We have many more grant applications in the works & we hope the aid will come to us. It is desperately needed! It's been a great week! Oh and Tasha is getting quite a big belly!!!! All the best! Hi All,
Andy asked me to post an update on the Shelter. He & Jen have been "up to their eyeballs" in the day-to-day operations of the Shelter and a medical emergency. They also still do not have Internet at the Shelter. I promise to post photos as soon as possible. We have a bunch of new residents at the Shelter in just the last few days. We have a Mama dog with six puppies. The pups are 4 to 5 weeks old & are very healthy. In fact, they have already been eating solid (well mashed up) puppy food. They have not been named yet. Perhaps when we get photos posted some of you can suggest names! Last night Andy & Jen received a call about three abandoned puppies that were in dire need. The three pups are only about two weeks old. Sorry to be so gross, but the pups were full of maggots. Andy & Jen spent most of the evening at the vet with these pups. All of the maggots were removed & some rather strong medicine/treatment was given. One little on did not survive. The good news is the other two were OK to be brought back to the Shelter. More good news...the Mama dog who was weaning her pups accepted the little ones as her own. They are feeding very well. Their bleak outlook changed overnight! Be thinking of some good names for one wonderful Mama...now with eight puppies! As always donations are needed, especially at this time when the house is full & we desperately need to expand. Please spread the word to your family & friends...www.playadelcarmenpets.com Thank you, everyone for your moral support & for your generous donations. Maureen,
Thanks for all you do. I think I can find some extra pesos to donate to the shelter. I've given their number out to a few people I've met who are looking for puppies....so HOPEFULLY we can start adopting more out soon. The lovely Bonnie (now called Karma) is an EXCELLENT one dog referral team. She gets lots of attention on the streets. And lots of locals ask where I found her b/c they are looking for a dog too! Libby, thanks for posting the (horrible) picture of me and my lovely Karma. Ugh! Remind me to shower and put on makeup next time before i go! Or maybe just remind me to actually GO to the beach and get some sun!

We dropped a new puppy off at Andy and Jen's tonite. Luckily she probably won't be there long as she is healthy and adorable. Jen thought she might even get a new home tonite as they knew someone who would want her!
Not counting the new one, they currently have 42 dogs!!! They range in age from 10 days to 10 years. So if you live in Playa and don't have a pet (or only have one or two ) get over and pick out a new friend. And of course, the Peanut Pet Shelter 2008 Calendars are still for sale at the front desk of the Luna Blue Hotel. Hurry and get one (or another one)...February is just around the corner.

I know it has been a little while now but Gary and I went to wash day at the Peanut Pet Shelter back in January and met so many wonderful people - hi Libby & John, Maureen, Marissa, Rick, Claire, Andy and Jen - I know there were a few more sorry but that's who I remember. It was an incredibly enjoyable afternoon and we have lots of pictures with fond memories. Andy and Jen we think you are so awesome and we are thankful to be part of it if only for one afternoon. Jen, you were sick the day we were there and upon our return to Isla Mujures Gary came down with a bug and was sick for the rest of our vacation. Thanks a lot! Just kidding - a bunch of people we met on Isla had a bug as well. We cannot wait for our trip back to Playa next year to meet up once again.

I know it has been a while since i have posted on the forum (something thats about to change) mainly due to having no internet and not having much time to hit the internet cafe's.
So a bit of a quick update... we have recently rehomed 3 dogs to the USA, Tasha, George and a new pup Mandy now all have happy loving homes north of the border
also the young female that Tony and Cheri brought to us (Dita)
We have recently been given a young pregnant female and a young male pup,
Its been busier than usual here at the shelter , there has been a bit of an epidemic here in Playa of kennel cough (according to a couple of vets i have spoken to) and we were hit kinda hard, and sadly we lost one of the puppies (Jackie) after it progressed to pnemonia, all the others have however gotten over the worst and are on thier way back to perfect health. Many of the dogs have been for thier vaccinations this week in the case of the puppies thier first shots, we also had two more of the girls speyed at the Perrera, Vero and Milly were the next on the list and the ops both went well, and the girls were actually running around this morning as if nothing had happened. The visit to the Pererra was my saddest to date, nearly all the pens were full with four or more dogs stuffed in them, its hard to explain how upsetting it is to see them in this state, but worse still is the noise. What gets to me the most is as you walk by the pens they all look at you with this sad hopefull look and many sit and offer thier paws. This visit was different tho as i was finally able to talk to the lady in charge (Sandra) about some ideas i have had to help more of these dogs (we can do this now as we have recieved our paperwork), i want to use some of the unused area at the Pererra to build pens, we could then take some of the healthier dogs, and with the meds we supply, get them well and fit enough to be rehomed, i also want to be able to suppl food for all of the dogs there and maybe by doing these thing get them to change the "3day rule" and hopefully extend the time the dogs have there. One thing i want so badly to do is to try and find a supply for the Pererra of euthenasia drugs so that if the dogs have to die it can be done quickly and painlessly. Another of my ideas is to get internet at the Pererra/pet Shelter, there is at the moment no phone lines there which means when someones lost pet is brought in there is no way to let the owner know and as few people know its location or have means to get there then sadly thier pet is destroyed, i want to be able to put all re-homable dogs and lost pets on the website so an owner can contact us and the dog can be returned to its home. There were this week three dogs in particular that i needed to try and save, all three are very obviously discarded pets and i have managed to get them put seperate as they all are new arrivals and appear healthy, i have promised Sandra to bring food and meds for them so they can start on the road to recovery. As i said a visit to the Pererra is always a sad one , i have taken some pics but i want to warn you they are upsetting and as i am not posting them for "shock" value if you are easily upset , please dont page down any further. . . . . . .
These are two of the dogs i am trying tyo help. they are both Akita's and are so sad and confused, how could anyone throw out thier pet like this, they are very malnourished but will still lick your hand
They are a couple and i have named the male Hoshi and the female Kiki and are probably 6 years old or more
Again i am sorry if any of these pics were upsetting, there were many more much worse that i discarded . Most of you have given us such great and generous support, and without your continuing help we couldnt do this, but i am asking if any of you has a spare dollar or even the change from down the side of your couch (tho no half eaten chips please ) please send it so we can help these beautiful animals, Thank you Andy ( Dogman) __________________ |
