Today we went to our own secret beach where the waves were gentle, the water was warm and all the women were topless. In other words, we were the only ones at Mamita's this morning.
![]() The sky was overcast and there was even a bit of a drizzle when we started out for the beach. By the time we got down to Mamita's, it was lightly raining and a strong breeze was coming in off the ocean. There was literally not a soul to be seen anywhere on the beach as far north or south as we could see. Out on the ocean there were a lot of whitecaps, and we could see some pretty good sized waves, but by the time they hit the shallow area near shore they were no more than 2 feet. The water was bathwater temperature--even warm to the touch. It was still raining when we walked into the ocean, and we remarked it was like sitting in a warm hot tub in a cold rain back in northern California. That's what our life has become...we think of the Caribbean Sea as our personal hot tub. ![]() While we bobbed in the water, the rain stopped and the clouds began to thin. We had occasional bursts of sunlight for a moment or two. This weather system is obviously winding down. Looking south towards Tulum, the sky looked clear and blue. By the time we got out of the water it had stopped raining. We talked about how good the cool breeze felt. Of course cool to us may be different for others. It's 78 degrees here, and after a couple weeks of near 90, the drop in temperature felt good. We joked about trying to bottle the breezes so we could use them again in July when it will be scorching hot. As we headed home, there was still no one on the beach and no one heading down the street toward the beach clubs. The Mamita's staff was hanging out around the bar looking bored. We are guessing that most people vacationing here think that unless the sun is shining, the beach won't be enjoyable. They're wrong. Even with overcast skies and a bit of a sprinkle, it's still the warm Caribbean Sea. If you're in Playa right now, put down your margarita and go to the beach.

We strolled down to the beach this morning to get in one last dip before we leave for a short trip to San Francisco on Tuesday. On the way down, we ran into Crazy Eddie & "the boss Angie" & two of their friends. Eddie has been talking about his friends' trip for weeks....but it looks like they made a last minute decision to tag along. Look out, Playa!
It's 82 degrees, sunny and humid, and the water was absolutely perfect this morning--calm with gentle rolling waves and that gorgeous Caribbean blue. There were some large clouds in the sky, but they didn't look threatening. It would be a great day to go fishing or just hang out on the beach. We saw quite a few fishing boats heading out this morning, as the dorado are running. While bobbing we talked about our respective last nights--Tony finally got to see his bullfight in Cancun and Cheri stayed for the Parrothead party at the bar. And we talked about our upcoming trip to the US which we're both really looking forward to. Even so, we had a tough time getting out of the water this morning! We'll be back with more beach reports in a couple of weeks. Next week the only kind of report we'd be able to write is a fog report! Hasta luego.

Thanks Cos. The drink will be low octane for me but I'll defintely stop by and say "Hi" to the "naked lady and the cable car" painting for you. Vesuvio's was the first bar I ever drank in when I moved to SF. Still one of the worlds great watering holes.
A drink at Vesuvio's, a visit to City Lights Bookstore, then into North Beach for some pasta. Wind it up at the Saloon for some late night blues with Johnny Nitro and the Doorslammers. A pretty good evening. Papa T

I need an updated beach report. Has anybody been to the beach between 8th and 10th recently? This is the area in front of the old El Faro. Just wondering what the condition of the beach is, how the construction (noise) is coming along, etc... Thanks for any updates.

We know it has been awhile since we've posted a beach report, but then again, it's been awhile since we've been to the beach.
But since we're heading for San Francisco this week, we thought we'd get our beach fix before we left. So this morning bright and early we headed down to Mamita's.We've just passed the midpoint mark of the hurricane season, and so far we have been pretty lucky--not even a tropical storm. But a couple of near misses seems to have scared some people away. Even for low season, the beach was pretty deserted this morning, which is okay with us. We don't mind our own "secret beach." (And it's free! )The weather was warm, the sky was overcast, and there was a nice breeze blowing for a change. As always, the water was bathtub temperature, clear, and a beautiful turquoise in color. We'll try and keep up our beach reports when we get back from California. Here are some shots from today's trip: A sight not often seen: every beach chair at Mamita's empty: ![]() Don't you wish you were here? ![]() Even when the beach is almost deserted, you can count on at least a couple of thong sightings. ![]() Oh, and look at this! On the Mamita's road we saw this really cool billboard. We should check this place out! ![]()
