Default $40 range hotels- Alux, Pension San Juan??

Planning a trip in May (low season) and will be staying in PDC for 2 nights before heading to Punta Allen.

Been to PDC on 3 occasions and always have been pleased with their budget accomodations. Ive stayed at Hotel Hul Ku, Hotel Posada Freud & Hotel Casa de Gapola (b/t 05-0/7 when they all offered $40 rooms).

I like to try new hotels each visit and the $40 a night budget is getting to be slim pickings in PDC. So far, my research has pointed me toward Hotel Alux or Hotel Pension San Juan. Which one do you recommend?? Im looking for cleanliness, charm, friendly staff & close proximity to the bus since we will have backpacks. A TV or A/C is not necessary, we can live w/out the frills.

...Or if anyone can recommend another hotel in that price range other than where I've been I'd greatly appreciate your help!

We just stayed at Pension San Juan and liked it. the rooms are small but clean and the location is great between 6th and 8th. I would reccomend A/C because there isn't much of a breeze. Seems like all the hotels have gone up in price. I noticed that alot of stuff and places have gone up quite a bit since last June.

Default Sian Kaan

We like Posada Sian Kaan, on Calle 2 between 5th & the beach. It's only a short schlep from the bus station, and you can go across the street in the morning to Cafe Press and have breakfast and French pressed coffee within the sound of the lapping waves.

We were there last month, and it looked like this hotel was closed.

Hello,
We are also playa bound in May (low season).
Last year we booked our first night at ALUX playa del carmen, paid 400 pesos.
http://www.hotelalux.com/playa/index.htm
the rest of the trip we stayed at coco rio
I would recommend ALUX in a heart beat....It´s walking distance from bus station, and 1 1/2 block from 5tha AVE...Nice and clean rooms, they do have TV...wish I had taken pictures.
this year we´re staying at Hotel Riviera Caribe maya...since we preffer the north end and it has a swimming pool (taking son this time).

See ya in may!

Hi Scott and Beth - we have also stayed at Mom's Hotel a couple times and enjoyed it and it would be in the $40 price range. In the morning they have a couple of tables in their court yard and provide coffee and pastries. We enjoyed sitting around with the others staying there and chatting over coffee. At Pension San Juan we enjoyed the roof top kitchen area but the Alux looks really nice too. The Coffee Press is a favourite place of ours too. Have a great trip.

From their website, it looks like maybe they are remodeling.

Well, that's good news. I had never seen it all closed up like that, and completely empty.I wonder what will happen to the prices after the remodel

They own another, much more upscale place, or at least they share web space with Lab Nah. I don't see how Sian KAan could go upscale without tearing it all down and building new from scratch. But, if they put in AC, they could command a lot more money, given the location.
