A message from Chief Brian Borjesson, Playa's Bomberos
BOMBEROS QUINTANA ROO ACADEMIA VII 2008
Hola, once again it is time for Playa Del Carmen’s famous BOMBEROS DE ACERO ACADAMIA AND COMPITITION for the State of Quintana Roo championship. Course beginning Monday 24th March thru Friday the 28th this year we will have 20 Fire Fighter Instructors from the United States. For Capt. Bill Salmon and Battalion Chief Mike Carr this is there seventh year in support of this Academy. Bill and Mike are the leaders as Bill has been doing what I do here in Playa for several years longer on Cozumel. He and his wife Jane come several times a year and Bill always has a new tool, Fire Truck or Practice for Cozumel Fire Fighters as well as our men. In California, Mike is head of Cal Fire training; both these men are an invaluable asset to Playa. I also must mention my little brother Bruce Borjesson in California he receives, stores and ships donated equipment from Calif to Mexico for us. He does the work and I get he credit.
This year we are going to do our biggest undertaking ever. Part 1 of the course is with 4 Fire Mechanics from Colorado they will be running the Mechanics portion of the Academy. It is our goal to pump test every Fire Truck in Q. Roo and repair or teach the Mexican Fire Fighter mechanics how to. Part. 2 are for instructors teaching them to be better instructors. Part 3 in USAR Urban Search and Rescue this training is like Fireman’s SWAT TEAMS ready for anything and trained and equipped for it. This training makes our men ready for the ugly dangerous rescues. These courses give our men the confidence to be brave. The 4th Part is ATTACKING FIRES AND HOSE MANAGEMENT they will learn many new ways to use their fire hoses and work as teams.
We will be using the new Seguridad Social Hospital out near the Police station. We have the permissions to use the 3 story buildings, it provides all the elements for the drills and practices we want to do. We will use smoke machines and smoke the building areas, go in and do our drills. When your practice is simulated like the real thing, it is much more valuable training.
This training is so important, with this training our State fire depts. Work as one dept. Under one command and trained equally. It has proven to be very successful when you have a large incident and have to call in another department for support. And they arrive and you know them and have trained with them makes all the difference in the world. For myself and all our instructors we would like to thank you, all of you who participate and donate to help this event happen every year, It is truly an event supported by our local businesses and Tee Shirt sales.
So when you see us please come up and say hello give them a hug or a kiss and thank them for their time and dedication to making our town a safer place to live. During the week there are several events the public can participate in, like the 3 legged race Saturday 22 Mar. 7 p/m starting at La Rana Cansada Hotel & Bar on 8th street. Next on Friday 28th March we have the Pot luck dinner at Bad Boys Beach Bar 2nd & 4th Street on the beach. Last but not least on Saturday the 29th March 1 p/m the Competition begins for the State championship. Please come and wear your local fire shirts to show support if you don’t have one buy one the money goes to support the Academy.
God Bless you all.
Thank you very much for your support
