Default Driving to punta allen

We will be coming in July will we really need a jeep to make it to Punta Allen? We have rental car set up nissan tusru(sentra) i drove my sentra from Denver to Cabo once and had to take a detour through the desert (rain had flooded the main road) and had no problems even though many others were getting stuck. We will be stopping in PDC just can't drive by without stopping is there any new places that are can't miss while in PDC? Thanks, Mark

Although we rented a Jeep (2 wheel drive), I saw smaller sedans making the trip to Punta Allen. You will be fine.......just don't drive in the sand. This goes for 2 wheel Jeeps too.

We made the drive a few years back in a crappy rental sedan. There are spots along the way that can be pretty sandy so plan on gunning it through.

What day are you planning on being in Playa?

We just did the drive in March and there were not any sandy spots on the main road.....That was my third time to go down there and the road is without doubt in the best condition since I have been going down......It looks like they dropped gravel in all the potholes and smashed it down........Now when you turn off and go towrds the ocean there was lot's of sand.......

Drove down 2 weeks ago road was really good but that could change with a few days of rain. The road to Punta Allen is always a crap shoot.

Just got back...spent a couple days in Punta Allen. Took a taxi from the Tulum bus stop ($60 USD)- got there real quick in a taxi sedan (some sort of Nissan sedan) with zero problems. The new road is a lot better! Where are you staying? Have a blast!

Default Thank you all.More???'s

Thank you for the info. We will be "in the roo" 7/15-7/24. I am finding that the insurance cost more than the car rental. Do I really need all the coverages? Never have had it in the past but that was B 4 I became a single father, still had lots of open credit, and I didn't have others to worry about back home. Are there places to pull off and go for a swim along the way? We are just winging it so don't have any places reserved for our nights as not sure where we will be each day. Love this site great people and info. Hope we run into some of you while we r in PDC. Counting down the days.

Check out Serenidad Shardon if your seeking accomodations in Punta Allen- they have everything from tents- small casitas (cabanas)- to a large house. Along the way there are lots of places to stop for a swim- either it be a beach or a cenote. Where are you renting the car- Playa? Never rented a car in MX---never thought about the insurance...

When we first started renting cars in 2000 you could decline the Ins......Now I think you have to at least get liability......And they also put a hold on your CC for a couple of thousand dollars......It may have actually been three......

What are they quoting you as far as a price with INS and what kind of vehicle?

You may have seen this already but we got this......

and it was $70 a day and that included the INS........

Default Car

easyway rental has Quoted Nissan Tsuru GSII standard transmission, a/c.
The cost for the car rental will be $108.00 usd for 9 days.
You can add the mandatory insurance (liability) and it cost you $99.00usd +10% tax for 9 days, or the package insurance (CDW,ALI,TP,PAI) $225.00USD +10% tax for 9 days. (+ the car rental cost) Seems to be about the best deal so far.

Sounds like a good deal when you break it down to the cost per day!

I KNOW! We pretty much drive everywhere and PWM is right, it is like superhighway compared to years ago, BUT they haven't had much rain, so that could change everything. We only went as far as Xamah Dos, did I spell that right? Only about 10km from the bridge, but the road was SOOOO much nicer now.

Default most likely and more ??

Plan on moving farther south each day untill we get to Punta Allen (Unless we find someplace that we just love). One side trip to Coba. But like having the freedom to go anyplace anytime. Thinking Buffett concert at Luna sounds fun. Are there any places to hear live music Blues, Rock or Reggae?

Don't know about your music situation, but Coba is a really great trip. I don't know if it still holds, but on Sun., no admission. It has got a little more commericalized as they have carts and stuff for water. The first time before that, I thought I was gonna' dehydrate before we got out. So to save
$$$$, pack water bottles and stuff cause you can spend at least four hours...Don't forget to climb the pyramid!

And stop at some of the little villages along the way, they have really good stuff. (We always stop just because we always bring school supplies with us to give)

Don't know if I would STAY there, never have. But with the crocs, I did notice no stray dogs or cats. ps. eat at the bus station, they have great food, can't remember the name, but it is where they pick up everybody.

(side note) our first time there, there was a kid off the dock and he has a stick, pokin' one one the head...i am WTF? Seems to be the they just come up on land at night, so the kid wasn't even scared of it! Hence, no dogs or cats around.
