Yes. As a matter of fact, it is probably my favorite town on the Riviera Maya. It is just 35 minutes south of Playa.

From what i looked up, it sounds like tourists are not welcome there

CHEMUYIL MEXICO

Chemuyil is a small Mayan village located about 5 km. south of Akumal. The village is home to many locals who work in Akumal and the surrounding areas.
The road to enter Chemuyil is gated and tourists are discouraged from entering. It is not a tourist zone. The beach and the bay are private property and closed to the public. However, if you have been invited or have reason to go there then all you need do is explain your circumstances [in Spanish] to whoever meets you. Do not expect to be greeted with open arms here; as mentioned this is NOT a tourist zone. You can visit the Cenote Xunaan-Ha which is located down a windy road just a short walk outside of the town. You can swim in the cenote and it is breathtakingly beautiful. It costs $3 for adults and $1.50 for kids.

I think this information is probably a bit outdated. It is true that Chemuyil is not a tourist zone. They are not set up for hosting tourists with hotels, bars, travel agencies, car rentals, etc.

All beaches in Mexico are public. However, the access roads to the public beach may be private, thereby making the public beach inaccessible. In the case of Chemuyil beach, my understanding is that the road is open, but a guard does ask for a donation for upkeep of the beach area.

The people of Chemuyil might not appreciate a large busload of tourists being suddenly dopped off. But if a few tourists wanted to enjoy the beach and have a meal in town, I'm sure they'd be happy for the business.

I can't tell you how many people forwarded this exact passage to me when I was promoting the casitas in Chemuyil. Much of this is completely incorrect. True, it is not touristy. It is a thriving local town. You will love it. The beach across the highway is beautiful and entry will cost you just a few pesos at the small guard shack on the access road. Funds go to support the family that caretakes the beach and looks out for the turtles and their nests.

Thanks for the clarification about this Libby, and Michele As much as i heard about people going to Chemuyil, i didn't think it would be a problem. I am glad you told me about the donation at the gate, or i would have thought they were trying to rip us off!
