Default Paamul Question

I've heard Paamul is a beautiful beach. But I've also heard its very deserted and can be hard to get a taxi back to your resort. I am wondering if anyone has been there...and if so, how hard would it be to ask someone for a taxi back to Aventura Spa Palace? Anyone have any ideas? I'm not sure how the bus system works either, so I dont know if I'd want to do that. I'd prefer to take a taxi.

I've been to Paamul. I live here
There are no standing taxis here, so you'll have to have one called.
That's easily done at the restaurant or at the guard house.
The entrance to ASP is only a mile or so south of Paamul - very close
It is very pretty here, but the shoreline can be rocky - just so ya know.
And the snorkeling is very good here.
Pretty, eh?

Gorgeous!!

Okay, so Ive heard horror stories of people asking for a taxi at the guard shack and the resturant and the taxi never showing up, so they had to walk to Aventura Spa Palace and it was quite scary on that really busy highway and they saw dead cats and a dead bat on the road. I really dont want to treck my 62 and 73 year old parents through that...so, do you think it will be easy to get a taxi? What if we dont speak Spanish that well?

good point
ask for rick, if you can't get a taxi
Better yet...arrange a taxi at the ASP to pick you up at a certain time (preferably the one that takes you there)
If that fails...ask for rick

I think you may have been given the wrong impression about Paamul and Rick's beautiful photo does not help. Paamul is WELL populated and is usually abuzz with activity. You can't swing a cat without hitting an English speaking ex-pat resident or vacationing caravaner. Seriously, it's just not as remote as you may think. You will not get stuck for a ride.

But his advice IS helpful, and welcome!
Michele is right, and Rick is, too;
Paamul IS a beautiful beach crescent, but it doesn't give one the feel of a deserted beach. We always make it a point to get to Paamul at least once during every visit, because it does make for a nice beach day, and the snorkeling is very good. We get there early in the morning for the best snorkeling, then chill out by the bar/restaurant (and pool? Is that still there?) for the main part of the day, when cruiseship groups come to snorkel. But our experience is that they leave by mid-afternoon, for a few more hours of relaxation.

Are there a lot of shells and stuff on the beach?

With the risk of getting yelled at....is it possible to take shells home to the US? Or is that a no-no?

Is there a specific spot where the snorkeling is best? I've been wanting to try the snorkeling at Paamul, but some friends of ours went and were very disappointed. Granted they did not go early in the morning, so maybe that was the problem.

It seems to be hit or miss
I'm not sure if early morning is the key...or time of year.
The primary spot is the easily reachable reef in front of the restaurant and dive shop.
I took some folks to Akumal a few weeks ago and (everyone sees turtles, right?) they saw no turtles. In fact, they saw very little sea life at all. I don't know why.

As far as the cruise ship tours...they only come in twice a week (thursdays and saturdays, i think) and are here late morning for a few hours.

Spent a day at Paamul last week. Ive been to lots of beaches in the Yucatan and this ranks top in beauty! The water color and the rocks are very breathtaking! We took a taxi there and got a taxi back with no problems. We asked the staff at the restaurant- the taxi came within 10-15 minutes. I walked along the shore with sandels and highly recommend this, it is very rocky. My husband snorkled said it was great snorkling! Be sure to tell us about your trip!
