I would suggest not going to El Paraiso hungry. The last few times we went the food was inedible, and the prices EXTREMELY expensive....like $250 pesos for shrimp tacos!!! Stop at Pollo Bronco (those potatoes are to die for) or bring some small snacks, or eat first.

Red - I think we will likely be hanging at El Paraiso at least once or twice while we're staying in Akumal. Let me know if you guys wanna coordinate so was to be there at the same time.

Yes indeed, Stewie! Mashed potatoes, (pure de papas) all wrapped in tin foil, twisted at both ends. Just sweeze and suck on this buttery, rich delicacy. I know...it doesn't sound very girlie. My friends Susie, Tyra and SarahB taught me this trick when I was a just a novice. Tyra & I also sucked on cigars that day on the beach... much to Suzie's chagrin.
Poor Suzie lost one of her diamond stud earrings that day too.

What a great girlie day! I will never forget it!!

Oh...and I absolutely love Pollo Bronco's fresh tomato salsa. I could eat it by the spoonful on itself. Hot (picante) but NICE kinda hot. Heheh.

BTW... this photo, and our girlie picnic took place on Shambala Petit Hotel's beachfront. Thank you for rescuing me Roberto. I am forever indebted to the charming, cute and warm owner of this little hotel.

Haha! You are so right about this! (hi guys xo,,,hug,,,welcome back to Playadise, xoxo ).

In March, 6 of us went there and decided to eat at the restaurant before we got settled on the beach. It cost us well over $1,ooo pesos to eat. We didn't order anything fancy... 2 of us had a hamburger, guacamole, ceviche (we all shared) and one drink each...and that was at about 2:00 pm. Then, we decided to lounge on the beach for an hour or two. Well...it didn't take very long for someone to come and collect money for the loungers that we were using. We were charged full day rate.

I told the senor that we were only going to sit around for an hour or two and that we had just spent a small fortune at the restaurant. "Can't you please give us a break in this case, amigo? We are leaving soon" "No...lo siento." "We are not affiliated with the restaurant, amiga. This is totally separate."

With all of this being said, I still love El Paraiso Beach and we will still go out of our way to spend a day or two there. However...we will be wiser next time. We will pack a lunch from Pollo Bronco and eat it 'off property' and then enjoy our loungers at El Paraiso, for the rest of the day.

We really miss our friend Fermine, btw...(Dj Fermix). He used to spin the most amazing music behind the bar. I am glad that we still keep in touch through email, after all this time. He is a gentle, loving soul. xo

Good point Cheri! I've had very basic stuff there (guac and chips). Last time at El Paraiso we just walked a few hundred yards south and had lunch at Mezzanine...

When we're in Tulum, we often go to Paraiso beach and just hang out at the area north of the bar/restaurant. There's a little dirt road that takes you there. We take our own food and cooler of beverages. Many locals do the same thing. If you get too close to the restaurant's turf their little security guard will come over and try to shoo you away, but they really can't do anything because, by law, the beach is public property. The beach is beautiful, but the people at the restaurant piss me off by trying to keep people off "their" beach. I respect their property and their right to make a living, but the beach itself isn't theirs.

Man, what the heck is going on down there now?? I never had a problem going there, but haven't been to that beach in a few years. Is Tulum really get commercialized now as well or is everybody just out to make a buck at the expense of negative publicity?? Kinda sad.

OK........I've written down the chicken place, I know to take the bus and then the taxi. If I want to hang in front of the beach club I have to pay for chairs and . I think I have it. Maybe????

This is the plan for the second day as the last time we went to Tulum we didn't make it to the beach. Disappointing to say the least.

Can anyone tell me how much beer is there? I hate traveling with money as I tend to lose it (or spend). I would just like an idea of how much to take. We always bring a collapsible cooler with us. It has come in handy every year, as we just stop and fill it up at one of the stores. But I didn't want to drag it all the way to Tulum.

You pretty much got it. Just don't try to eat your chicken there...the security guard will be all over you. It's stupid since you pay for the chairs.

Pack a bed sheet with you and you can move just north to enjoy your food. Get there early, trees for shade are few. Just leave your towels on your chairs.
As for money... I always wear one of those waterproof cigarette containers around my neck. I keep my ID and money in it. It has an adjustable strap so you can tighten it around your neck while swimming.

So is this dirt road just to the north of Paraiso? Does it open into a parking area? I remember the first time we went (in the van with A'ndrea and co.) and Paraiso was closed. We parked just to the north in a parking area which looked like a local entrance to the beach.

I'm wondering if there are also other beach clubs to the south of Paraiso? If you take a right at the T, are there places that are good for hangin' out down there? We'll have to do some exploring this year. My husband didn't like the food at Paraiso at all last year...and it wasn't cheap!
