The options vary from really basic and cheap, to pretty fancy and very expensive. I stayed in Cabanas Tulum, basic concrete block rooms - a step above the stick palapas, but I had my own little terrace that was all there was between me and the beach. It was $50 per nt including tax. There is a restaurant and bar there. Very, very quiet and peaceful. Near many other places with lots of restaurant choices. But really only a good choice for a budget traveler. If I was going there and wanted to pay more, I would probably opt for La Zebra or Ana Y Jose's.

try this site www.mexicancaribbean.com/Small_Hotels/Tulum/. or this one
www.hotelstulum.com/
We have stayed at Cabanas Tulum twice and it is good for a budget place, but we really had a great time at Tita Tulum. Have also tried the rustic stick huts, but most likely wont do that again. Happy searching

You can go www dot hotelstulum dot com and get a whole lot of info. Use the menu at the top left for the hotels list and then choose in town or on the beach..You should be able to find what you need...

Damn.......not quick enough tonight......

We always stay at Shambala. We love it there! The accommodations are great the beach is amazing and Roberto, the owner, is truly a sweetheart.

It seems a lot of cabanas do not allow ice chests. Actually I am not sure if this is the norm at all of them. Is there really a local sanitary law against this? I can see something regarding food, but what about just having for cold drinks?

hi there, new to this forum. my boyfriend and i will be in the area end of April, beginning of May. We are making our way down from Cancun to Belize, over to Guatemala and back. For those of you that have stayed in the rustic cabanas, you mention you probably wouldn't do it again, why? when we were down there last time, just for a day visit, we thought it would be cool to do for a night or two...any advice, plus or minuses are welcome- thanks!

There is not law. I believe that ice chests and food is not allowed in the cabaƱas because they attract insects and other unwanted pests. I agree with you regarding cold drinks.

Personally, I wouldn't stay in a really really rustic cabana...not the ones with a sand floor and the walls made of sticks. Too many insects and mosquitos can enter. Shambala is rustic but in a bohemian chic kinda way. The cabanas there have concrete floors and solid walls but have a palapa roof. Mosquitos do get in but not as much. The very rustics ones are sorta becoming extinct from what I've seen while walking around last week. You will find quite a few backpackers just south of the Tulum ruins where they set up tents or stay in the more rustic cabanas in that area.

Don't forget to pack insect repellent!

I gotta have air condition. I am just too freaky about sleeping with the windows open unless there is an armed security guard posted outside my hut.

We stayed at Zazil KIn with a sand floor and stick walls, thinking the same thing you are("it will be a cool experience"). We thought we love to camp so this should be no problem.
Well, we did have a net, but it was of no help. We were bitten all night. It was so bad that my wife Got up at 4 a.m and went outside nearer the water for a reprieve from the 50-100 or so bites she had. The shared bathroom was 400ft. away from our room with no night lights anywhere. The other bad experience was that we found a scorpion under our 3" thick matress. . We did bring a flashlight, so that helped. Peed just outside our room after dark, no problem, other than worrying where that scorpion was The bar late at night was definitely one of our great experiences. People just came out of the darkness from nowhere and we all had a great time partying with 2 for 1 drinks all night.
Been there done that, but like i said we just won't do it again. Many people do love it though and continue to stay at these places every visit. All i can figure is they don't normally have the bug infestation we experienced.

Oh jeff, that's horrible. I actually heard a similar story in person from another man up here. Not sure which place it was he was at.

We loved Cabanas Tulum, on your advice, and we'd stay there again. It was like a motel on the beach. Every room is right on the beach, ocean view. very simple, cheap, but cement floors and your own bathroom.

Thanks everyone...sounds like we won't be doing the truly "rustic" version...I lived in Belize City for 2 years, so can handle bugs, etc...but that picture of the scorpion-ick! Nah, I'm pretty good with rustic, but I'm thinking since this is the beginning of our 18 day trip (headed to Belize and Guat from here) maybe we should "splurge" the first couple of nites- lol. Regarding Cabanas Tulum...any reason to not choose the second row since they are cheaper (other than the obvious, no view of ocean)??
Anyone stayed at Zahra? specifically in Tunich- looks decent. And, I don't see rates for Shambala listed...anyone now the price range...I emailed them, but nothing yet.

Again, thanks to everyone for your input.

There's still view from the second row...as far as I know, that's just a row of two or three that are set back a little further from the main row. We stayed in that row. They are still ocean view, just like I said, set back a little further.
