Default Deserted Beaches

Good Afternoon to All,

Can you tell me of the best deserted beaches in the area? I will be going to Playa in the early part of May. Of course I will understand if you dont want to share...there's always the posibility of them becoming popular and not deserted!

Thanks,
Gabe

You will have to join the Secret Beach Team, for that info. (inside joke)

Go south, Gabe, and look for dirt roads. Never know what you may find.

If you walk north of Playa proper, you will have a range of options, depending on your definition of deserted.
We like hanging out at Coco Beach, because it has a beach bar/restaurant and restroom facilities, plus great snorkeling close to shore. We have been there during peak times, and it is never crowded. If you continue north from there, past the AI resort, the beach becomes quite deserted.

Just keep in mind, deserted doesn't mean locals don't keep an eye on it. You will have to be mindful of your belongings.

I joined and didn't get any info about a secret beach-my biggest gripe.

Ditto.

Finding them is half the fun!

If you're not looking to make a production out of it (as in requiring a rental car), look no further than Tulum. You can catch a colectivo to Tulum Pueblo and then for roughly 50-60 pesos you can get a taxi to take you to La Zebra. Walk south from there and things will quickly become desolate. This photo was taken out front of Ocho Tulum, a new entry on the Tulum scene for 2008. It's less than a mile south of La Zebra and a tiny bit north of a restaurant called Ranita. Beyond Ranita, it's pretty much nothing but deserted beach...

How far can you walk? This was the view s of the Sandos Playacar on our visit. No one showed up when we were there, which made for a very romantic afternoon!

JimmyMN, those are some cool photos of the beaches just south of Tulum. I set the first one as my desktop.

Those are probably your best bet if you want a "deserted" beach. Deserted beaches aren't all they're cracked up to be. Although the one in Tulum is very nice, I spent the better part of an afternoon trying to set up a tent there once and it ended up getting blown down every few minutes and filled with sand. I spent days trying to get all the sand out! But the water is beautiful, and it makes for a great afternoon of frolicking on the beach. There's also an area on the north side, between Playa Paraiso and the ruins, that's "deserted".

Mahuhual also has some deserted beaches on the north end of the pueblo, but they're covered in driftwood and garbage from Hurricane Dean. I was there in December, and it was so bad you almost couldn't walk on the beach without shoes.

Thanks for the nice comments...

Those were shot with a Canon A640 (point & shoot). It was the perfect day for beach pictures... the ideal combination of clouds and sun. If you ever get down that way, spend an afternoon at Ocho Tulum. They have a fabulous restaurant and the view from their deck is priceless!!

Jimmy
