Question Laparoscopic surgery?

Has anyone had this procedure done? I'm scheduled for surgery on Tuesday and while I know a bit about the procedure itself just wondering if anyone can give me some more insight.

I don't know anything about it, but I'll be thinking of you on Tuesday, Katie. Let us know how you are doing.

I've had a laparoscopy. They first give you some happy drugs through IV and send you into surgery where you will be under anesthesia. You will have two small incisions......one in your belly button and one at the site of surgery.....at least that is what they did for me. The second incision was about 1 1/2 inches in length. Recovery time was not so bad and I was up and walking around that day......with the help of vicodin. The after surgery pain didn't even come close to what I had prior to going in. I've since had a C-Section so I can't tell you what the scar site will look like in the years after but my guess is that it won't be so visible.

I've had 8 surgeries to date, and one procedure was supposed to be laprascopic, but my stomach is a mass of scar tissue and the doctor said it was like drilling thru a brick wall. But my friend had lapro and she was in and out the same day. A couple days of recovery and she was good as new. You will do great, just keep calm and know that the doctors will take good care of you. My only suggestion would be to ask every possible question before hand, that way you will be informed, and the doctors and nurses will know what you want and need. Good luck!

True......my recovery time was short. I was more irritated that they made me get dressed and booted me out before I felt ready to move.

I have had laparoscopic surgery before. In comparison to an incision, the former is much better. You will feel discomfort in regards what your surgeon has removed/fixed, but not much as if an incision were made. Loose clothing is ideal so the incision near your belly button will not become irritated. If you want a new belly button, now is the time to request one. The incisions for a laparoscopic surgery are small and will fade easily if the skin is not prone to keloids, etc.

Good luck with your surgery and I hope that you get to feeling better very soon.

My wife had it a couple of years ago. It was day surgery, not that big a deal. You will have to rest for a couple of days afterward and take it easy until you feel 100%. As already mentioned, it is a huge advance in surgery because you don't have to recover from an incision. I believe that it's often used as exploratory surgery. In my wife's case, it was to examine the extent of her endometriosis.

I am not sure what kind of procedure you will be having- but if it is one in your abdomen it usually goes as follows: there will be two or three incisions, depending on technique used.
On the ones I assisted we used three incisions (procedures such as taking gall bladders out or a fundoplicatio of the stomach).
First a gas is used to inflate your abdomen (otherwise there would be no way to see as everything is packed nice and tight down there). Three "Trokare" (don't know the English word here.......), sort of long pipes, are used: one with a little clamp f.e. so you can hold things away, the other with the instruments needed for cutting or stitching/ clamping, a third with video and cold light source.

While the cuts and procedures inside are the same as you would perform with open surgery the incisions are of course a lot more minimal.

The patients I have seen in surgery and after have recovered very fast- those with procedures on their gall bladders usually left the hospital two days after the procedure (the wait was not due to them doing bad but to do some follow ups on them, ultrasound- wise).

The one thing that bothered patients most was pain that stemmed from remaining gas in their abdomen......sort of like when you have flatulences that won't go away and are stuck under your ribs.

I hope your surgery will go well and you'll have a speedy recovery!!

Again, thank you for all the well wishes.

This is what I know as of now. They are going in to try and diagnos and treat endometriosis. That is what they are thinking is causing the problem. Long story short, I have been having acute pain in the left side of my pelvis. They sent me in to have zn ultrasound done that didnt really show much of anything so this is the next step. It will be a day surgery basically I'll be there for 3-4 hours.

Mostly, I've been concered about recovery because with two kids I need to figure out ahead of time how much help and aide Im going to need for them.

Thanks everyone who has shared their experiences with me, it helps to have some idea of what to expect.
