Default Floods of 2008!

Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana....it might be similar to 1993!

I survived the floods of 93 when Des Moines was without water for 12 days and electricity for over a week. I just hope this isn't as bad. Having to drive hours to take a shower sucked and with the price of gas here right at 4/gallon, it would really suck.

Local experts have told us to prepare for "significant flooding". Time to get some beer!

Andrea from Germany is a jinx. she goes to NY then 911 happens, London, then a bombing. New Orleans and and Katrina hits...of course this happens just after she leaves. I love to give her a hard time about it. Luckily nothing happened in Texas after she visited.

Hope it ends soon... Stay dry....and send us and Atlanta the rain.

Downtown is bracing for the worst. Most companies near the river have moved out and sandbagging is underway. All of the bridges down town have been closed and our local spillway has been opened up.

We have rain in the forecast for the next several days. Our city officials say that the levies (improved dramatically after 1993) will hold...hopefully!

I will try and post some pics later.

Basement is coming along great! So far, dry! Which is more then I can say for my neighbors. Sump pump is going like crazy....but I don't mind. I actually got it all dry walled, taped, and mudded. Now I just have to save up some money to carpet/tile it. It'll be a while, but I'll post pics when I am done.

Downtown bar district is under a foot of water so far. They say the crest will be 3 inches short of the records set in 1993. I am heading down there this afternoon, I'll take some pics!

Thanks Deb!

Wow...that was really bad in '93. It probably will not be as bad this time but still, what a bummer. I guess you will need to empty out your basement just in case, eh? I hope that your nice basement doesn't flood Adam, you've worked so hard on it already. Thinking about both of you during this time (as I do often anyway ) and keeping my fingers crossed that all will be well.

Get your rubber boots on, your case of beer out and have a flood party.

Hugs & love to you and Sarah. xo

Downtown DSM

Some lines across the river...normally, way over the river!

Can you tell this is a dam with an observation deck?

Another of downtown (capital in backround)

Some poor guy's front yard, I can only imagine what his basement looks like.

A turtle! Saw a ton of them, it must have something to do with the flooding?

Driving range, completely covered

This house is empty...

Garage of the same house above

Another road closed!

A local park shelter.

Tomorrow they are shutting down part of Interstate 80 (major road) because of the flooding. So far though, no major injuries that I know of and for the most part the levies are holding and we are looking good. Crest of the rivers in Des Moines is set for Sat/Sun...that will be the true test!

Thoughts and prayers with you. Only saving grace, if you know a hurricane or flood is heading your way, you can get out of its way. There have been several times in the past that we close up shop early b/c of flooding, you just have to be smart and safe. Even if it sucks, your family is A LOT more important than material things. Keep us updated.

You are exactly right about knowing ahead of time.

Thanks to both of you for your support.

Really though, we aren't in any danger, we live in the burbs!!! About the worst thing that could happen to us is losing our water or electricity, but they have assured us that won't happen.

The real problems are in Eastern Iowa where whole cities have been evacuated and flooded.

Thanks for the pics Adam, things a lil soggy round these parts too! If I'm not mistaken, the 93' flood was supposedly the the "500 year flood" this is gonna be real close- let's see that's 15 years, right? Who comes up with these sayings anyway?
Take care of each other and remember "bubbles up."
