Bostons are extremely smart, can be stubborn, are very good with kids, and what dog books call "high spirited" which you can translate as a bit hyper! They need exercise and attention, but are very loving. Mine had a little separation anxiety, I think, from being in a shelter. She does not like to be alone, but so far has not been destructive other than chewing up a few rugs.

Also, and I don't think this is characteristic of the breed, but for the first few months I had her...she ate her own poop! It was really disturbing, to say the least. Other than THAT, I am so happy I got her and hear much of the same from others who own them. They are unique, sweet, happy little dogs.
Thank you! I've found a few breeders in the state as well as a couple of rescue sites. I, too, don't want a yippy dog, but one that can hold his/her own with my two kiddos. That's one of the reasons why we've enjoyed having my parents' dog with us this whole time...she's just so much fun and a joy to have around. And, the kids have done so much more with the dog....i.e., feeding, playing, letting her out, etc. With cats, well, you can only do so much before they look at you like you're crazy.

The poop thing...we had a Springer Spaniel growing up and as a pup he ate his poop. My sister just got a new puppy...a Bernese Mountain dog (22 lbs is NOT puppy size to me ) and Moxie, the puppy, "recycles" as well.
