Funny.....I was trying to think of the words to say here, and you explained exactly what I was trying to think of. Truth be told, Joni means nothing to me either. I don't "feel her" so to speak. She wasn't my era, so she doesn't elicit any emotion for me. And the same will go for my kids. "The time of the world" is exactly it...what is happening at that moment, what the celebrities and songwriters and influentials are doing to try to change what is happening at that moment in time is what will influence the youth at that time. For instance, my 13 year old daughter loves the song "Hands Held High" by Linkin Park. My husband's initial reaction to hearing it played loudly in her room was to try to banish it because there were swear words. ![]() But upon further reflection, it is a song about protest of action...a song about standing up, a song for her 'era', much as I think this Joni was for some of you. It's just one of many songs that have meaning to kids these days, songs that seem a lot heavier to us "older folks" now who were perhaps used to our folk music bringing peace, but these songs still bring the same protest of action and meaning to kids and youth today, and are just as valid, in my mind, even if they seem more heavy, or morose.Hands Held High Turn my mike up louder I got to say somethin. Lightweights step it aside when we come in Feel it in your chest, the syllables get pumpin People on the street they panic and start running. Words on loose leaf sheet complete coming. I jump in my mind and summon the rhyme i'm dumping. Healing the blind I promise to let the sun in Sick of the dark ways we march to the drum and Jump when they tell us that they wanna to see jumping. F**k that, I wanna see some fist pumping. risk something, take back what's yours say something that you know they might attack you for cause I'm sick of being treated like I have before like it's stupid standing for what I'm standing for. Like this war's really just a different brand of war. Like it doesn't cater to rich and abandon poor. Like they understand you in the back of the jet, when you can't put gas in your tank, and these f**kers are laughing their way to the bank, cashing the check asking you to have compassion, AND have SOME respect for a leader so nervous in an obvious way Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay and the rest of the world watching at the end of the day in the living room laughing like "what did he say?" Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen In my living room watching, I am not laughing, Cause when it gets tense I know what might happen The world is cold, the bold men take action have to react or get blown into fractions. Ten years old, it's something to see, another kid my age drug under a jeep, taken and bound, and found later under a tree, I wonder if he had thought the next one could be me. Do you see, the soldiers, they're out today they Brush the dust from bulletproof vests away. It's ironic, at times like this you pray, but a bomb blew the mosque up yesterday. There's bombs on the buses, bikes, roads, inside your market, your shops, your clothes, My dad, He's got a lot of fear I know but enough pride inside not to let that show. My brother had a book he would hold with pride A little red cover with a broken spine. On the back, he hand wrote a quote inside: "when the rich wage war, it's the poor who die" And meanwhile, the leader just talks away Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay and the rest of the world watching at the end of the day both scared and angry like "what did he say?" Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen. With hands held high into a sky so blue as the ocean opens up to swallow you.

I don't know why we are playing Amy Mann vs. Joni Mitchell, but Lucinda trumps them both.
Sun came up it was another day And the sun went down you were blown away Why'd you let go of your guitar Why'd you ever let it go that far Drunken Angel Could've held on to that long smooth neck Let your hand remember every fret Fingers touching each shiny string But you let go of everything Drunken Angel Drunken Angel You're on the other side Drunken Angel You're on the other side Followers would cling to you Hang around just to meet you Some threw roses at your feet And watch you pass out on the street Drunken Angel Feed you and pay off all your debts Kiss your brow taste your sweat Write about your soul your guts Criticize you and wish you luck Drunken Angel Drunken Angel You're on the other side Drunken Angel You're on the other side SOLO Some kind of savior singing the blues A derelict in your duct tape shoes Your orphan clothes and your long dark hair Looking like you didn't care Drunken Angel Blood spilled out from the hole in your heart Over the strings of your guitar The worn down places in the wood That once made you feel so good Drunken Angel Drunken Angel You're on the other side Drunken Angel You're on the other side Sun came up it was another day And the sun went down you were blown away Why'd you let go of your guitar Why'd you ever let it go that far Drunken Angel Drunken Angel

You know I cannot remember any Sinatra, Crosby (Bing), Como, Mills Bros. etc.... ( my folks tunes )being played as background on TV commericals 30 yrs after their "heyday" like I can Zepplin (Cadillac) OR "Like a Rock" (is it Bob Seeger?) (Chevy) but then I just toss it up as the advancement in technology (they didn't know they could back then) and in advaced target markets (guys n dolls my age who are supposedly have the buying power.) I may have drifted on this but if anyone catches my drift just "Roll with It Baby." Thanks PDS for those Lucinda lines. ![]() Good luck Louise, (Zepplin, Santana, CSN&Y, Van Morrison and O-yeah, JONI!! |

Incidentally, Barry, Zeppelin has been VERY very choosy about advertising and marketing with their music. In fact, you can rarely find movies or advertising with any Zeppelin music in it. There are three movies, One Day in September," "School of Rock" and "Shrek the Third" all have "Immigrant Song" in them, and I know Jack Black had to plead and beg his friend Robert Plant to use it. Cadillac used Immigrant Song too, I believe. And our Telephone company, Telus, uses Black Dog up here in their TV ads just very recently.
They also just - Oct, 07 - finally released digital rights to their music as well, I think coinciding with the release of Mother Ship. This follows years of resistance of 'selling out'. ![]() (Mother Ship is terrific, BTW, my son bought it!)

How many of you remember this one? ![]() In the year 2525 If man is still alive If woman can survive They may find In the year 3535 Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies Everything you think, do, and say Is in the pill you took today In the year 4545 Ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes You won't find a thing to chew Nobody's gonna look at you In the year 5555 Your arms are hanging limp at your sides Your legs got nothing to do Some machine is doing that for you In the year 6565 Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too From the bottom of a long glass tube' Whoooa In the year 7510 If God's a-comin' he ought to make it by then Maybe he'll look around himself and say Guess it's time for the Judgement day In the year 8510 God is gonna shake his mighty head then He'll either say I'm pleased where man has been Or tear it down and start again In the year 9595 I'm kinda wondering if man is gonna be alive He's taken everything this old earth can give And he ain't put back nothing Now it's been 10,000 years Man has cried a billion tears For what he never knew Now man's reign is through But through eternal night The twinkling of starlight So very far away Maybe it's only yesterday In the year 2525 If man is still alive If woman can survive They may thrive In the year 3535 Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies Everything you think, do or say Is in the pill you took today ....

Leonard Cohen, Sisters of Mercy...
Oh the sisters of mercy, they are not departed or gone. They were waiting for me when I thought that I just can't go on. And they brought me their comfort and later they brought me this song. Oh I hope you run into them, you who've been travelling so long. Yes you who must leave everything that you cannot control. It begins with your family, but soon it comes around to your soul. Well I've been where you're hanging, I think I can see how you're pinned: When you're not feeling holy, your loneliness says that you've sinned. Well they lay down beside me, I made my confession to them. They touched both my eyes and I touched the dew on their hem. If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn they will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem. When I left they were sleeping, I hope you run into them soon. Don't turn on the lights, you can read their address by the moon. And you won't make me jealous if I hear that they sweetened your night: We weren't lovers like that and besides it would still be all right, We weren't lovers like that and besides it would still be all right. This has remained one of my all time faves. Having trouble keeping it to five songs...
