Default The Top Ten Guy Films of All Time

This months GQ magazine has the Ten Best Guy flicks of all time. Guy flicks...you know...stuff getting blown up, sword fights and shootouts, tough dames and evil bad men, car crashes and lots of cigarette smoke. Not agreeing with GQ's choices, here are mine. Please add your own!

1. Bullitt. The coolest movie ever. Steve McQueen, Jacquline Bisset, and the hills of San Franciso. Before the legendary car chase, watch for a young Robert Duvall as the cab driver.

2.The Yakuza. Robert Mitchum in his fifties as a former WW II soldier who returns to 1970's Japan to help his oldest friend by asking for a favor from his oldest enemy. "A man never forgets. A man pays his debts."

3.Valdez is Coming. Burt Lancaster as an aging Mexican Border town deputy who turns out to have a past the white ranchers who disdain him never imagined . "Tell them...Valdez is coming".

4. The High and the Mighty. John Wayne as the co-pilot of a 1950's airliner in danger of crashing in the Pacific. Not only one of the Duke's best, but a great look at air travel back in the day when men wore ties and ladies wore hats.

5. Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Sam Peckinpah's masterpiece about loyalty vs survival. The theme is set in the first five minutes when Sheriff Pat Garrett gives his old buddy Billy the Kid a week to leave town or go to prison. Somebody asks the Kid "Why don't you just kill him?" The Kid replies, "Because he's my friend."

6. The Seven Samurai. Kurosawa's greatest film. Seven Ronin (Samurai without masters) are hired to defend a village of peasants from bandits. The best battle scenes ever filmed. Or watch the Americanized western version, "The Magnificent Seven".

7. Escape from New York. Lee Van Cleef as the top cop, Donald Plesance as the President, Andrenne Barbeau as the girl with large breasts, Issac "Hot Buttered Soul" Hayes as The Duke of New York and Kurt Russell as the one and only... Snake Pleskin. "I heard you were dead".

8. Casablanca. The greatest film ever made. Bogey and Bergman. Bad Nazi's and heroic Frenchmen. "As Time Goes By" is the theme song. Greatest casting of classic character actors ever. You have to choose, running away with the woman you love, or saving the life of her husband who just might be the hope of the free world. What would you do?

9. Twelve O'Clock High. Gregory Peck as General Savage (don'tcha love that name?) of the US Air Corp based in England in the early days of WWII. Savage must transform a hard luck bombing group in order to save their lives. So what if he's a tough SOB and the boys hate him. He can take it. Can't he?

10. The Gallant Hours. James Cagney in one of his last roles as Admiral "Bull" Halsey. Filmed as if it were a documentary, the movie follows Halsey through the greatest combined land and sea battle in History, the fight for Guadalcanal. No battle scenes, just the quiet examination of men whose leadership requires them to send other men to their death. Stunning.

For those who live in Playa (Mark are you listening?) I have these all on DVD if anyone wants to borrow them.

The Wild Bunch (1969) A simple recap from IMBD: "An aging group of outlaws look for one last big score as the "traditional" American West is disappearing around them."
It's another Sam Peckinpah film full of gratuitous, delicious violence. Ya gotta love that Peckinpah slow motion death

And I need to toss in Pulp Fiction

2001 was right on the fringe for me there. I did also love 2010.

Along the same lines as "A boy and his dog"....I think "On the Beach" has merit.

Not necessarily in order:

1. Vanishing Point
Quote:
Super Soul: Hey Kowalski, you out there?
2. The McConnell Story
Quote:
Capt. Joseph C.'Mac' McConnell, Jr.: I think I'm going to call you 'Butch'
Pearl 'Butch' Brown: Why?
Capt. Joseph C.'Mac' McConnell, Jr.: Because when I look at you, you cut me into pieces.
3. Cool Hand Luke
Quote:
Dragline: Anything so innocent and built like that just gotta be named Lucille.
4. 12 O'clock High
Quote:
General Frank Savage: [on stalling the transfer paperwork] There can be trouble in this.
Major Harvey Stovall: I don't think so, sir. I never heard of a jury convicting the lawyer.
5. Cannonball Run
Quote:
California Highway Patrolman: Headquarters, we are still in pursuit of the black Lamborghini.
Dispatcher: Car 42, you've been in pursuit for two hours. Another five minutes and you'll be in Arizona.
California Highway Patrolman: Yeah, and we're going to stay in pursuit until we catch them.
Dispatcher: It didn't take us THAT long to catch Dillinger.
6. American Graffiti
Quote:
Teenager in car: [to Terry] Is that you in that beautiful car? Geez, what a waste of machinery!
7. The Great Escape
Quote:
Hilts: Wait a minute. You aren't seriously suggesting that if I get through the wire... and case everything out there... and don't get picked up... to turn myself in and get thrown back in the cooler for a couple of months so you can get the information you need?
Bartlett: Yes.
8. Full Metal Jacket
Quote:
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Oh that's right, Private Pyle, don't make any f***ing effort to get to the top of the f***ing obstacle. If God would have wanted you up there he would have miracled your a$$ up there by now, wouldn't he?
9. The Departed
Quote:
Colin Sullivan: Do you know what will happen if you shoot me?
Billy Costigan: Yeah, this bullet will go right through your f***ing head!
10. Bridge on the River Kwai
Quote:
Commander Shears: I'm getting worse, you know. Sometimes I think I'm Admiral Halsey.

Oh Yeah!!! The Great Escape for sure! And how could I forget Cool Hand Luke if only as David B says, for the car washing scene. ("Pop little safety pin, pop!") I'll add another..not top ten, but still a favorite. Under Siege with Steven Segal as Casey "F'ing" Rayback, the Ex-Navy Seal Superman and gourmet cook.
