Default Help With A Song

Since Cocinelle's music thread has been so successful and I've found so much new music I like through that thread, I thought I'd bring this new task to my Roo friends.

Even though Kelsey is just starting competition season for this year, it is already time for her to start thinking about and reserving songs for her solos for next year. She has a song set for her lyrical solo and her self-choreography, but she is still deciding on two songs for Modern and Contemporary.

For these two dance mediums she needs songs that either: 1. have a lot of emotion 2. tell a story 3. have lots of varied sounds. For Modern especially, songs with a lot of sounds, etc. are great to coincide with movement (electronica, etc.). Examples of some artists that have been used in the past are Bjork, Sia, Fiona Apple, even Marilyn Manson! Kelsey really wants to have something interesting to work with, Modern dance can be a very artistic display and interpretation of a piece of music, and since Kelsey is a very artistic person in visual and display arts as well as dance, this dance is her favorite and so she is searching for a very interesting, emotive song. I would love to hear any ideas anyone has!

Here are two ideas she has so far, both are Imogen Heap songs:

Anything from Evanescence would be great as Amy Lee writes some very introspective songs. Don't know if they'd be right for Kelsey, but you might pick up their first cd and take a lister. I'd sugges 'Lithium' for one.

I just gave a quick listen in iTunes...that's a very powerful song. I'll keep that one in mind and give her a listen to that one.

This is very special for me, so haunting and full of feelings.

Dancing Queen?
Tiny Dancer?
one of the things that always bothered me at the dance competitions( my daughter was a dancer for many years, too) is I never knew the music.............the dancers always picked something off the wall that I had never heard before
when a dance was performed to a song I've heard, I swear I liked it better
what's that song that was written for JFK Jr's funeral?
it tells a story, but the song is so pretty

Oh, Cocinelle! I really like that one! That's great, good job!

Lori, I know what you mean. For instance, in Lyrical dance it sometimes really gets to me when I watch Kelsey compete and have to watch all the dancers, because generally girls use slow, sad songs and after awhile you just want take a bottle of prozac. Now again, Kelsey is quite artsy so she tends to like songs a bit out of the ordinary. She has already chosen her song for her Lyrical solo next year, it is one I love, a great rendition of a great song, but one that some people may find a little...'different':

Here's the song Kelsey is competing with in Modern this year. It's Extraordinary Machine by Fiona Apple. I'm not a huge fan of the song, myself, but Kelsey likes it and the dance is quite fun. However, it is kind of..."cutesy" and she wants to get a bit more...'heavy' next year.

Wow! What a beautiful song, Michele!

Funny, that movie has been peeking at me from the shelf at the video store for awhile...I'm going to have to rent it this week now.

Kelsey really liked that song, but she says it's more fitting for Lyrical than for Modern or Contemporary. She thinks she has finally chosen a song for Modern, but she may end up changing her mind as she often does. However, she has reserved this following song:

Streck, I don't know whether to be thankful with you or mad.

I mentioned Effanescence to Kelsey, and she went "Oh yeah!" and went and investigated some songs, since she still needed one for her Contemporary solo....

Well, she has decided on My Immortal....and I listened to it, and I just don't know how I"m going to stand it. I think she's chosen it because of the words, and their somewhat parallel to my mom's sudden death, and my guess is it's a way for her to work through some of her emotion with that. So it's not enought that I already cry everytime I see her dance, but now with this song....I'll be a mess.
