Wow!
I would have been vomiting if I had been a passenger! ![]() The little town we live in is a commercial airline pilot enclave ... the training commercial pilots receive is constant and rigorous ... kudos to the flight crew on that flight! ![]() (How did the cameraman know to film that flight, I wonder?) |

Funny- I live here and only saw it on TV today when a patient pointed it out as my TV is broken.
We had an "Orkan" this weekend with very strong winds- as has been reported- and damage all over Germany. Typical storm for the start of the year. I was actually bewildered that they didn't stop airtraffic alltogether at one point as the people here were actually warned to stay inside, which rarely happens and shows authorities were a bit panicked. The footage nearly stopped my heart- he did an awesome job without a doubt. And I am even more happy that he did that job so well as IF that plane had crashed I would have no doubt have had a call to come into the clinic on the weekend- the clinic where I am working in surgery right now is one of the big ones with max. medicine, so we would have surely been on full alert in the surgery and internal departments. |

OMG I am going to have to double my ativan dose now.
Question, though...why did the pilot attempt to land in that storm? The winds were obviously crazy on the apporoach (did you see that thing coming in sideways?). Why didn't he abort earlier, I wonder? |

For those wondering why there were folks filming- ironically the patient that pointed this out to me on TV today told me (when I was wondering the same) that there are folks (he is one of them) who, as a hobby, watch and film incoming planes. And of course esp. when the weather gets yucky as they do wait for something like this to happen.
As for why traffic was open- I guess first of all their problem were the isolated high gusts. Also the storm had a first portion that came through during the night- with a lot of huffing and puffing and making me think it would blow my house away- and a second nasty portion started on Sat. afternoon. My best bet would be that this was taken between the two fronts, when the weather was nasty but halfway okay. |

Good training but traffic should have been shut down. DFW shuts down during thunderstorms because of downbursts. One crashed about 20 years ago when a downburst hit .
My nephew told me that it took 2 aborted landings for their transport could land at pittsburgh. The decline was steep and the runway was too short for that big of a plane. He was in the Marines and this was at the old airport there. Of course, being Marines, they weren't Skeeerrd!

My better half was horrified to fly all her life (55) Until last year, she went to a local therapist who spent 3 hours with her, now it doesn't phase her. She was bad, we'd have to literaly knock her out. 30 mins before baording, 2 double cocktails, and a valium. By the time we were taxiing she'd be out
Point is...for anyone with flying issues...help is out there
