Default Another Stingray death.

Our local news is reporting that a woman from a small town near us was killed by a 70lb Spotted Eagle Ray that jumped out of the water and hit her while she was standing on a boat. This happened in Marathon Florida. When we were in Akumul I saw a Eagle Ray. I was swimming to the side of it in about 6-7 feet of water. I was staying well away from it. Then a group of snorkelers started swimming towards us. The Ray switched directions and swam right under me. I was a little nervous and stopped swimming and just floated as he went under me.

I think you may have seen the leopard ray. It was there when we went snorkeling. I wrote about it in my trip report..hopefully I can post the video later.

Why would a ray jump out of the water?

When a group of us took one of the tours in Akumal 2 years ago the guide told us they were eagle rays. They are the same rays that David and I saw this year. I did a quick google search and it I see in one place that eagle rays are sometimes called leopard rays. But then I found a picture of a leopard ray and it had more leopard like spots on it than the ones we saw in Akumal bay. I just saw a news show and the picture of the one that killed the woman definitely looks the same as what we saw in Akumal. It's a weird case of being in the wrong place and the wrong time. The news story said that the ray might have jumped out of the water to get rid of one of those fish that sometimes attach themselves to other fish. Like shark suckers. I did see shark suckers attached to turtles in Akumal this year.

The only story I read on this said the ray knocked her down and she fell in the boat, what it did'nt say is if she died from the fall or from being stung?

Talk about wrong place wrong time, dang......

Yeah Barb, I had read that she was sitting in the passenger seat of a boat, the boat was travelling at abt 25 MPH and the ray leapt out of the water and smacked right into her. Apparently she was killed immediately, as was the ray. Talk about a freak accident!

They are covering it a lot on the news here. It sounds like she died from the impact of the collision. She lived in Caseville which is a small town about 35 miles from here. She was big in the running of the Cheeseburger Festival. A Jimmy Buffet caribean type party that runs over two weekends in Caseville. Her daughter in law is also my daughters spanish teacher.

I read that she died from the fall (hitting her head) as a result of the leopard ray hitting her. It was very sad.....

Holy crap!! I vacationed in Marathon this last September and we saw a ton of rays while snorkeling. Almost ran smack dab into one on the beach near the "cut" at Bahia Honda State Park!! I'll consider myself lucky!!
