Thank you, redhairgirl1! It's easy to take "vibrant" photos around here. I like Isla Mujeres, it's definitely worth the trip. It's different from Playa, not nearly as developed, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The ferry is a short, and smooth, 40 minute or so ride from Cancun. I also enjoy taking the trimaran cruises over from Cancun. Lunch, snorkeling, and open bar are included in the price and it's a lot of fun.

So Dan O, any pics of you? I always picture you to look like Chris Farley

Does the car ferry drop you off near where the Miramar ferry lands on Isla? That is a fun day trip, lots to see, laid back, and easy!

rodman- the car ferry docks on the south end of Isla. I believe the passenger ferries land on the north end, in the downtown area.

I dug out my Mapchick map of Isla, and see that it is or was about 1/2mile south of the Navy Base.....I would love to use someone like your father inlaw for trips/tours.....a retired professor? I hope his business does him well, and that the gas prices don't sink him!

Keep sending us pictures! Here's one of my favorites at Punta Sur...

Toss in a dash of Heinz 57 and it's perfect

Cancun-Chetumal Road Trip
6/7/08

Although we had planned on getting up and leaving early for Chetumal today, a late night forced us to reconsider and we we “slept in” until about 9:00 am. We got up, showered, and went by Wendy’s aunt’s house to eat a little brunch and say goodbye. After some scrambled eggs and tortillas we said our “goodbyes” and we finally left Cancun about 12:00 am- and I wasn’t sad to leave Cancun behind.

As all the locals know, there are two Cancuns: there’s the hotel zone, with all its luxury hotels and all-inclusives, and there’s the downtown area, which is an endless sprawl of urban blight which I don’t like very much. The locals call the hotel zone the “zona hotelera” and the downtown are the “zona atolera”. It’s kind of a play on words involving “atole”, which is a very Mexican concoction made of corn meal. Anyway, I don’t care much for downtown Cancun. It’s got all the modern conveniences and all that but the city just has no character of its own- it’s just an endless sprawl of concrete buildings, fast-food places, and box stores. I don’t mind it for a few days, but that’s about it.

It was a pretty long and uneventful drive. We stopped for gas at a 7-11 in Puerto Morelos and ran into a bunch of Americans who had just arrived at the airport and who were on a tour bus to their hotel, I suppose. They were middle-aged folks in flowery shirts and shorts. I got a chuckle out of how fast the men in the group headed to the beer cooler. One of them was toting as many six-packs of Dos Equis as one person could carry- he must have had at least six of them and I just knew he was going to drop one of them. In the line for the john, I asked one of the guys in the groups where they were from and he said “Houston”. When I asked him where they were headed he said “I don’t know, it’s a couple of people in our group’s birthdays”. I thought “WTF? You don’t even know where you’re going?” I guess he was just glad to be along for the ride. They looked like a group of serious partiers. I’ll bet they have a good time.

Stopping for gas in Puerto Morelos

Wendy (my wife) takes the wheel

Tulum pueblo

Rancho Tranquilo in Tulum

Downtown Felipe Carrillo Puerto

Stopping for "helado de coco" in Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Carlos,15, Wendy, and Celeste,8

South of Tulum, Hwy. 307 turns into a 2-lane road

Such a common sight "in the Roo"

Arriving in Limones, the fair was in town

Arriving Chetumal- The "Monumento al Mestizaje"

We didn’t stop in Playa. We just breezed on through. Wendy wanted to get to Chetumal and see her Mom and her brother, Daniel. I was in agreement, because we have plenty of time to get to Playa. In fact, we’re planning to go next weekend.

to be continued....

Great job. Dan-O.
Talked to a local gal here who had
an Isla shirt on and asked her if she had been
there and she said but it was getting to
built up(???) so next trip she was going
to HoBox.
Thought that was a bit odd.
Craig.

Why do you think it's odd to visit Holbox? It's an island I've always wanted to visit and I'm hoping to go this July to see the Whalesharks.

Chetumal- Boulevard
6/12/08

Chetumal has a beautiful boardwalk that runs for miles down the Bay of Chetumal. Locals call it the "boulevard". Although there are no natural beaches, the government is trying to make articial ones. But the water is still beautiful most of the time. There are many parks, restaurants, and monuments that go down this strip. We were out for a drive yesterday and I took a few photos. Although the sun was hiding, most of them still turned out OK.

The Megascultura This is supposed to be a monument to give Chetumal an identity, in the way the Eiffel Tower gives Paris one. However, the locals think it's just a money-laundering boondoggle started by ex-Gov. Joaquin Hendricks.

Statue of Lazaro Cardenas- President of Mexico in the 30s-40s

Bright Carribean colors are the norm in this area

There are a lot of funky monumets going down the boulevard- I have no idea what most of them signify

The Lighthouse- as you might expect, one of the older structures

Concha Acustica (Acoustic Shell)-this structure, shaped live a half-sphere, has great acoustics and is used by dance and musical groups for both rehearsals and performances

There are probably 4-5 parks for kids to play in on the Boulevard

There are many cafes and restuarants on the Boulevard where you can sit outside and enjoy the breeze and the view of the water

There are countless monuments in this area, it's the state capital of "the Roo"

I like this sculpture for the colors, I have no idea what it symbolizes, if anything

I haven't taken many photos this week, mainly 'cause it's been rainy and overcast all week. We're planning on going to Playa Sunday if the weather will cooperate.

Thanks for the pics of Chetumal, Dan-O! I've never been there. Very interesting. I hear they have a good museum - a Mayan cultural museum I believe. Have you ever been?

Libby, thank you. Yes, I have been to the Museo de la Cultura Maya, although it's been a few years. It is very good, they have built-to-scale replicas of most sites in QR that are under a glass floor. This allows you to walk over the replicas and get a bird's eye view of these sites. I will try to go by and take some pics.

Oh, how cool! I've gotta go see that! Boy, my list of must-do day trips and long weekend trips just keeps growing and growing.

What about food/restaurants in Chetumal? Belizean? Yucatecan? Any local specialties or something that stands out? Sorry if I'm getting ahead of your report!
