Default Our "Daytrip" to Valladolid

Early this week, our friends Dean and Jody flew in from Minneapolis to spend a week on the Riviera Maya. We met four years ago, while we were planning our move to Playa del Carmen. We have seen them again just one time since but we all get on quite well and were really looking forward to this visit. I wanted to plan a fun day for all of us, a day full of seeing new sights and doing new things. As Jody had put her foot down and declared it would be a "ruin free" day, I settled on a day trip to the quiet colonial city of Valladolid. Read more here. Part 2 to be posted tomorrow.

Well lubricated with tequila and sangrita, we wandered out into the square where hundreds of people were seated, dresses in their Sunday best, waiting patiently, staring at the enormous stage that had been constructed at one end of the street. Apparently, today was the day of the "Matrimonias Colectivas" a mass legal wedding ceremony performed free of charge for the poorer members of the outlying Yucatan villages who could not afford the process on their own. 250 couples, Mexican and Mayan, had traveled by bus and by foot from their pueblos to participate in this grand event.

Awesome pictures Michele! We really enjoyed Valladolid when we visited with friends from Chicago a few years ago. We also went to the Meson del Marques for lunch and it was wonderful! My girlfriend and I both got the sopa del lima and shared a plate of plain rice with fried plantains. Sometimes the simplest thing can be so incredibly good! It's funny how I remember that so vividly, but I can hardly remember what I ate for lunch yesterday.

Cenote Dzitnup looks great! I had wanted to go that day, but everyone else convinced me that we already had enough to do with our visits to Chichen Itza and Ek Balam. I definitely want to go back again sometime to see Cenote Dzitnup and revisit Ek Balam and Valladolid.

You can sign me up to come with you! I loved Ek Balam and would like to go back again. There is another cenote, very close to the ruins that I want to check out as well.

Awesome! It's a plan. Now we just need to set a date. That's the hard part. And we're still going to do PM one of these days, right?

Tell me about! It'll have to wait until after both of our U.S. trips.

Thanks Michele ... I really enjoyed your day trip to Valladolid and the pictures are awesome! My husband and I went there for a couple of days a few years ago so it brought back great memories. I will anxiously await the next instalment.

We have travelled to Belize however not to Placencia so I will be really anxious to read your trip report.

Love your report Michelle.
I love this city - we had a great time when we went there with Yuca Treks.
