Libby- I love the report and want to go to Mahahual and Xcalak, so I will refer to this report when I buy the plane tix's -Id like to go this Spring. A few questions...

Balamku Inn looks really nice...is it in walking distance to the places you visited (downtown, places to eat, boardwalk, ect...)?

Do you know if there is a place to rent bikes?

Do you know if the Playa bus goes to Mahahual?

Balamku is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from downtown and the boardwalk. You would need a car or taxi to get there. It is within walking distance of two restaurants, Travel In and Maya Luna.

Some places downtown to stay are Pachamama and 40 Canones. I think Matan Ka'an is downtown also. Hopefully, Claudia can verify. Luna de Plata is probably about 1/4 - 1/2 mile south of town.

Dont' know. Sorry. You might want to email some of the hotels I've posted about and ask them.

Yes, the ADO bus goes to Mahahual. Take a look at this post from Claudia and this post with info from Carol of Balamku for the bus schedule.

It's so great having this ability to peak into peoples worlds/trips through these reports. The perspective is second to none. Thanks for sharing your trip and the photos - it looked so peaceful and serene I'm sure it was nice to get away (even if it was only for a short period).

I loved that the hotel was eco-friendly and run by Canadians (YAY Canada!)... the beachside view didn't have anything to do with it .

The food descriptions had be soo hungry.

Looking forward to your next getaway report!

I keep forgetting to say that you should bring a flashlight with you to Mahahual, particularly if you'll be staying outside of downtown. We needed one to walk from Balamku to dinner at night.

Libby
Real interested in the hotel you stayed at- good prices considering the breakfast and other amenities. I checked it out on Tripadvisor and it gets great reviews! Will keep you posted if I go there. Thanks so much for the report, it was really helpful since I cant seem to find too much on that area online. It is a little bigger than I originally thought.

Let me know when you are planning to go,and for how long, maybe I could drive you there depending on my car's mood.
I really have a ton of things that have to make their way down there. so it might work.

I meant Sunbaby, But if your making a trip down in March? Maybe just an overnight trip. Would we be able to get a hotel for just one night then, or is there a 2 or 3 night min. at most of them?

Libby .. your T.R. was everything we hoped for and more. Great information. Last January we had planned on going to Mahahual until Hurricane Dean devastated it. It is amazing to see how far it has come in one year. It is now on our list for this January. The loco gringo site for Mahahual has not changed since before the devastation so we've been anxious to find out how much of the town is up and running again. Thanks Libby and Claudia!!

I heard that some people recently took a trip down to Mahahual... not mentioning any names... yet...

How was your trip?

I'm too lazy to do a trip report. It was fine, Balumku was great, and we stayed in the room under yours..and it is dark there at night...we needed a flashlight just to get from the parking lot to our room! I will get aound to a report when I get a burst of energy.

Heading down, with the family, this weekend. Finally decided to take a friend up on her offer. We will be staying here.
