Default Flyfishing suggestions?

My wife and i are tying flies for our upcoming trip to PDC. What type of flies (type, color, size) does Scott use for his flyfishing? We are thinking of Deceivers, Clousers, Crazy Charlies. Thanks!

Default Flies?

Where are you planning on fishing? I guess this kinda matters, but my most productive pattern I've had in mexico is a white and chartruse clouser, but that might be because thats what I mostly fish. I've also had luck with tan craft fur gotchas w/pink flash and thread. If you're going to be fishing off the beaches I would also try to throw a crease fly or popper of some sort on a floating line early or right before dark.
Good luck, I can give you some ideas of where to fish as well.
Scott

Welcome to the Roo 8wt!
Scott's the pro on that question. He has so much good luck fly-fishing in Mexico & he catches the prettiest fish, I'm sure you will too. Did you see our March 09 trip report? That has more fly fishing photos. The link is below. Scott (above: pescador) also has a fish album on this site that you may be interested in.

Scott and Beth,

Thank you for your quick reply. Our high level plan/strategy for our trip is to base ourselves at the South end of Cancun for the 1st part of the trip with exploring from North of Cancun down to Playa del Carmen (PDC), and then, base ourselves in PDC for the 2nd part of the trip with exploring from PDC down to the Sian Biosphere. I have been reading numerous threads looking for beaches with a) near off-shore reefs b) not in front of a hotel per se so i dont ruffle any hotel security c) shallow water and mention of eel grass. I have seen several threads recommending Enrique at Cancunflatsfishing.com. Also references to: a) Nipicue(sic) lagoon in Cancun b) flats at the North end of the Cancun hotel area c) Isla Muheres(sic) d) Cozemel. But, it seems to the area to the South from PDC down to the Sian that appears most appealing.

I read your trip reports with much excitement! Thank you so much for the pictures and detailed info; it is extremely helpful!! I must have missed the link to Scott's fishing albumn? May I ask for a reference?

Thanks again.
Craig

When is you trip planned for? How Long? I haven't fished near cancun and would be real interested to hear about this area on the north end of Cancun. Are you renting a car or going to be using the bus, taxi's or colectivos? If you do have a car the area in tulum right around the entrance to the biosphere is unbelievable, there are baracuda everywhere (bring wire leaders), schools of small bonefish, big jacks, blue runners and mutton snapper. About the eel grass....If there is alot of grass everywhere cast to the sand patches, if the grass is sparse cast to the grass. I don't know anything about guides in cancun, but isla blanca always intrigued me. As for a guides in Playa Eddy Pena will take you fly fishing, if you want his contact info I can look it up. If you interested in guides in Punta Allen or staying there, i can get you linked up with a woman named Niki who owns Serenidad Shardon, she knows all of the guides in Punta allen....I think if you get to punta allen on your own its 300 for a good guide for all day.....or you can walk around the dock and bargain, but who know who you'll get for less than that. when I fished there i fished with a guide named armando, when I went back and asked about a guide named armando I was told there are quite a few with this name...no luck meeting him again. Its definetly worth it to go on a trip there. On my trip it was a windy cloudy day and i caught 5 bones my first time ever fishing salt water and my casting skills were definetly not up to par at that time.
About your question concerning flies initially, if you going to be fishing flats as well, load up on the crazy charlies 4,6, gotchas 2,4,6, crabs 2,4.....Eddy told me that floating crabs work well for the tarpon off the beach if you happen to spot one and you may want to tie up some bigger profile streamers for baracuda......I could go on and on about this, but i need to go lay down I' m recovery from the swine and its starting to win again.

We are planning for the Cancun Hilton from Dec 11~15, approx 17km on the Cancun waterfront. And, the Holiday Inn Express in Playa del Carmen from Dec 16~21. For transporation in Cancun it will be the local bus. However, the colectivo looks like a great option. I need to read and learn about it. For our tastes, Cancun taxi's are too expensive. We thought our only transporation option in PDC was a rental car, but the colectivo and bus system sounds great!

I found the info on Eddy and need to contact him. May i obtain the contact info for "Niki who owns Serenidad Shardon?"

Bonefishing would be icing on the cake so to speak. But chasing small bonefish, big jacks, blue runners, mutton snapper, and snook / tarpon / ladyfish sounds great!

Thanks for the info. Gotta run for now.

Here is the link to Niki's hotel: Serenidad Shardon - A Mexico Caribbean Beach Vacation Retreat
Under reservations you can message her that way, or the # in the US provided on the site is answered by her son who resides in Michigan, who is very helpful.
